I have always hated hondas since i knew what cars were
but recently i just happened to hop on the band wagon
i purchased a 91 civic cx hatch and was told the car has a 1.6 in it
i do not know anything about these honda engine codes and i am wondering i have the option of buying a 02' si engine and tranny for 200$ will this hunk of motor madness fit in my car with minor modifications? or should i stay with the supposed 1.6 power plant i've got?

Where are they selling k20's for $200??? I suppose they should have a sweet H22 for about $100 too. Buy one for me and I'll pay you back next week. Actually I'll take a K20 too for the hell of it.

b16 is just THE most common because of its cost, availability, and aftermarket support

so a 1.6 in my hatch is a b16?
it is a SOHC motor........so i dont have vtech i know that much

VTEC, no H... please

and you probably have a d16 in your hatch. B16 is DOHC

see like i said i know jack about hondas
so the decent engine to stuff in there would be a .......b16 type r?

cx1.6
09-12-2007, 06:38 PM
well.........thats what i would love to stick in there but that would require major chassis mods..........so
is there an aftermarket out the for a d16?

There's a million things to investigate in trying to build up a honda powerplant especially with B series motors. You gotta look through the stickies in the Honda forums all the info and links you'll need are there.

Maybe do a search within the sticky threads for 'chassis' and see what's highlighted

Most of your engine questions answered here! (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2673547&postcount=27)

Look through the FAQ first, it explains alot. That post is from the FAQ and will fill you in on most of the common engine swaps. Most engine swaps don't require any chassis modification more complicated than taking a BFH and making a dent in a frame rail and buying a mount kit.

Also, Honda engine codes are usually found on a small flat area on the front of the block on the tranny side of the engine(it will be on the left side of the exhaust manifold by where the trannsmission mounts on most engines...don't know for sure on the K-series, or some of the V6 engines)

VTEC-Honda's Variable Timing, much like what every other import maker has..each one has a different name, to tired to name them. VTEC in short: low rpms=a less aggressive cam lobe for better fuel economy, and probably other reasons, then once you hit a certain rpm, it kicks the rockers over to a more aggressive cam lobe giving you better top end.

VTECH-They make phones...not motors, or anything to do with motors.

Do some more reading and become friendly with the search function here and your favorite search engine. Lots and lots of good reading on the net, just gotta find it(its not hard)

Oh yea, forgot to list some examples of what you will see for an engine code. Yours will most likely say D16Z6, also stock for the 4gs would be the D15B2. Ofcourse you also have the B16, B18, B18A, etc. etc. You can find a list of engine codes relatively easy. The first letter indicates what series the engine is: D-series is usually SOHC motors(with exceptions), B-Series are usually the DOHC motors. D & B Series usually come from a Civic and Integra and usually easy to switch between the 2 motors. The F-series usually comes from the Accords and is usually a SOHC motor, while the H-series came from the Preludes and is DOHC...also usually easy to switch between the motors...see a pattern? The K-series is the newer engines from the Civic and RSX's.

There are a ton more series, Wikipedia is also your friend. I said usually a lot while explaining them, because there are exceptions, which I'm not going into.

Like BLU Civic has said twice and I have said once already, read the FAQ. Click the links, enjoy.

A b16 requires no chassis mods, just bolt on stuff like mounts and shift linkages and axles..you will need a rubber mallet to pound a small dent in one specific spot ot clear the alternator but that is ALL. and btw if your talking about the k20 from the 02 si, then that is 160hp. The rsx has a 212 (with new sae ratings)hp k20a3, and the 06+ has the 197hp k20z3.

Adrian can be very helpful, just some of these older members get annoyed when people don't either use Search or check the FAQ first. Just gotta do some research on your own next time first, then ask.

But don't worry, I do shit like that sometimes before I search.

Actually, if you had a D16Z6 (92-95 civic Si) it would be a Vtec motor... and the only things that someone would need to change it to that.. A wiring addition, and some extra oil lines, (if it was just the head swapped)... and a ECU swap or flash.

So you might wanna search before you post things like this... you're obviously not an authority on what is and what isn't VTEC... so take the advice of the mod's and elders here... use the search function.

I can add my two cents about the CX model civic. It must be exclusively a Canadian car as I see them here in Canada all the time. I was a little bewildered cause most American forums make no mention of them at all. They came stock with a 1.5 and are pretty much a mirror image inside and out of the DX.

Most of my knowledge has been gained on these forums and I was a little bewildered the first time I saw a 4th gen with a CX on the back of it. There are all kinds of 4th gen model CX civics driving around Canada. I'm not sure what the deal is with them. They just have the 70 horse or whatever Dx engine in them.

is there any realstic advantage to bolting on a b15 head on a d16a6 block. i was about to replace the d16 with a b16 until some one threw this at me. can some one shed some light on this for me please, thanks

You can't bolt a b-series head on to a D-series block, or vise versa. You can bolt a D15b vtec head onto a regular d-series though. Just read the top sticky on the main page. You can find all the swaps and motor/tranny swaps possible.

old thread... almost a year old.

And there is no B15.. you're talking about using a D15 head on a D16, and no, unless it's Vtec, don't bother, b/c all the D-series heads EXCEPT twin cam, Vtec, and 8-valve are the same.
