Hesitation and backfire

Ok, this car is starting to get on my nerves…here’s the problem:
When I have the car in neutral press the gas hard, there is a long moment of hesitation, almost like the car is about to stall…I have to feather the gas in order for it to rev high…even when driving…and if I press the gas hard and let go, it backfires and shoots a flame :dunno: i don’t think it’s the gas b/c I put $15 in when I drove it home…about 88 miles…any ideas
