i own a 96 toyota avalon xls
recently
i was driving down the freeway when my a/c started giving out
this car hadent seen this sort of speed or prolonged usage/milage
in years
like it was an around town street car
after i stopped for awhile i came back and found the a/c working again
anyone know what could be wrong?

Couple of possibilities come to mind:
1. your cooling system is overheating, and triggered the compressor cutoff switch. I think it comes on at about 226* which you may not notice on your gauge since it's dampened.
2. if it was very humid out, you may have iced up your evaporator which defrosted when you let the car sit.
