Help Reprogramming Keys for 2004 Mini

I put a new battery in the key. I followed the directions to activate the key. It didnt work. The BMW dealer said that the key must be in the ignition to charge for 100 miles before it can open the doors remotely.
I tried that also and it didnt work. I also called the local dealer and they had no helpful suggestions. Does anyone know how to get the keys to work?
