front brake pad shim

I put my brake pads on without the shims..didnt come in box...can I reuse the old ones and if bent slightly? Also what do I coat the back of the break pad with to make the noise stop? (if i put on old shim can I coat it with elmers glue or grease or something cheap to make not make noise?
