Replacing Radiator....auto tranny

Hi, I'm new to working on cars but thought I'd tackle this one myself and as a girlfriend/boyfriend project. I went to pick up a new rad for my '91 civic hatch auto tranny and the guy at the counter asked "with or without tranny cooler?". Do all auto's have a separate cooler? In the crummy Haynes book it says "if the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, diconnect the cooler lines from the rad...". Is the automatic transaxle the transmission? What kind of rad do I get...are ones for auto and 5sp different. I know it's probably simple for everyone here but that's why I signed up. Any help is much appreciated!

Most radiators have the transmission cooler in it. Just check the bottom tank on the new radiator to make sure there are 2 spigots on the bottom for a smaller house. A 5 spd won't use those spigots, but the automatics will.

Yeah the autos have a built in tranny cooler in the radiator. So there ya go. You could use an auto rad on a 5spd but not the other way around.
