anti-lock brake light

My anti-lock brake light is on. What does this mean? How do I check it? Is there a picture I can see where the problem could be?

do you have your glasses on? Right below my question is the year but I do not know what you mean by trim level unless you mean LS which is my car. Thank you for looking at my question and I will be waiting for a answer.

He'll need an ABS capable scanner which can properly read GM ABS VI System DTCs. Even scanners like the Snap On MT2500 with proper programming fail to do this properly. No problems with a GM Tech II scan tool.

No other lights are on!!

Well, it sounds like solely an ABS only problem. You can try removing the ABS fuse and then taking ignition to on. Reinsert fuse with ignition off and then start it up. Since there are no other lights like traction control related most likely a problem at the ABS modulator/motorpack assembly but I am speculating. Also, check the electrical connector at the input of the EBTCM module which is part of the ABS pump/motor. Located below the cruise control module and brake master cylinder.

If the problem persists then you will need need to get it scanned with an ABS capable scanner to determine what part is malfunctioning.

You can physically check the wiring to the front hub's wheel speed sensors. Look for broken wires or corrosion, and you can use a DMM to measure the resistance across the two pins on the hub's connector. It should read around 1k ohms. If all that checks out, as bnaylor stated, you'll need it hooked to an ABS capable scan tool to determine your problem.

Ok this is all new to me-could you explain what the wheel speed sensors look like or put a picture on here please?

I just had it check and they told me it was my pump motor but didn't have time to find out exactly what it was. I was told to come back later so he can find out.
What is a pump motor and can this be fix by me? Does someone have picture of it?

Normally bad wheel sensors or related wiring trigger the TRAC OFF light but with just the ABS light on I would agree with the diagnosis. It failed the first part of ABS initialization where the pump motor and solenoids are checked but before checking the wheel sensors which really is not done until the car is moving and reaches around 10 mph.

It is the main part of your ABS braking system. That part you see to the right of the brake master cylinder and to the left of the cruise control module. With all the small hydraulic lines. It also has the EBTCM module. See pic below.

But either can be replaced separately. The EBTCM is the electronic brain of the operation. Pump motor is the back part you see with cylindrical part and the brake lines.

You may want to go with a used/pull. Ed Morad sells these parts.

The only time my ABS light came on in my Buick was when the brake line ruptured. Of course, I knew it right away as I had no brakes. The ABS system, works great when it works, but sounds pricey when something goes wrong and you need to get it repaired.

My new car ABS brakes were an option. I'm sort of glad that the ABS option was deleted. I drove for 27 years before ABS became available then 15 years with them and never found the need for ABS while driving defensively.

Personally I'm fine with ABS and I would not buy a car/truck/SUV without it. Also, you have to realize that the ABS system is the basis for the traction control system and low tire pressure monitoring system both of which come in handy.
