Possible exhaust leak problem

Hi all. This is my problem: 98 T/A 5.7L. When the car is in rev up fast in park or neutral I can hear a gurgly popping noise from the front left side in the engine(when i'm sitting in the driver's seat). It is more noticeable when you are at cruising speed and then hit the gas to speed up quickly. It is more noticeable when is in gear too. I thought at 1st that it was pinging noise like when you put low octane fuel on a car but I always use 93 octane gas on it. We check the knock sensor in the car with live data software while I was driving it and its working fine. My mecahnic heard it and thinks that it is an exhaust leak.

Any ideas on where to start looking and how to detect it? The only thing that i can think of is the exhaust manifold gasket or the donut gasket before the cat.

The sound it very annoying lol. Any suggestions will be appreciated thank you.

Most exhaust leaks I've heard of sound like a tapping sound.
Do you have factory manifolds or aftermarket headers?

I don't know if this is relevent, but my 94 formula has a tapping noise when cold, I thought it was piston slap, but its gotten worse over time, so I thought something might be wrong with the valvetrain or something... then my father took a stethescope(sp?) to the various areas and found that the tapping is coming from the egr valves.. might not be the same problem but it might be a good way to pinpiont exactly where the noise is coming from

It was actually the bolts that tie together the EGR pipe to the exhaust manifold. I changed the spark plugs wires and I was pretty sure that I tight them down but I forgot the driver's side. It's all good now. Thanks for the replies.:grinyes:
