'03 MC SS Trunk Opens Unexpectedly

Recently, my trunk has started opening unexpectedly. It's always when I'm away from the car and the doors are locked. Never while I'm driving. Replaced the battery about a month ago. Other oddities include: traction control dash light may or may not come on when car is started; 'service vehicle soon' light may or may not come on when car is started; fog lights may or may not come on when car is started. The trunk thing happens at work when I'm parked near other cars and at other places when there are no other cars within 50 ft. Dealer hasn't a clue what could be causing this.

Just a thought. Try changing the frequency on the key fob. This can be done through the stereo. Go to key fob program in the menu. These instructions are in your owners manuel. You have two frequencies to choose from. They alternate back and forth. If you change one fob you will have to change the other one. What is not written in the manuel is that you have to program each fob one after the other. Do not back out of the program and re-enter for the second fob. It will just change it back to the first frequency. As for the rest of the quirks it sounds like the body control module may be acting up. I have an 02' SS and it has been a common problem for those to go out. Something else to look at is the emergency release pull in the trunk. Maybe it is sticking. An option was the "Trunk Release Sensor Trap Alert" system. It used a sensor placed where the trunk light is located and opened the trunk if there was movement or the trunk reached a certain temperature. This is on page 2-14 of the owner's manuel.

Here's a little more of the puzzle. I was sitting in my car this morning waiting on a friend to go to breakfast. The key was off, but I was listening to the radio and had the driver's window down. I'm not sure of the time span that the lights stay on after the key is turned off, but as soon as the lights went off, I heard the trunk pop open.

Try the same thing again. If you can get it to open that way again at least the dealer would have something to work with.

Puzzle solved! I discovered some more strange things. With the engine running, I could pull the light switch and everything would be fine. But, when I would press the fog light button, my car would light up like Cash Cab. The dome light would come on, the doors would unlock, the traction control light would come on, and the door ajar indicator would illuminate. Turns out that it was the BCM(Body Control Module). Glad I bought the extended warranty. Cost me $100.00 but it was worth it to get rid of the annyance.
