I am looking at getting a 1998, 2 door grand prix gt and I had a few questions about it that I would like to know if someone could answer them foe me. Is it a good idea to purchase a 1998 with about 160,000km on the engine? What are some of the common problems with the Grand Prix GT?
What is the approximate lifespan on these 1998 motors?

If someone can answer these questions it would be appreciated.
Thank You
Hopemann

My mileage in kilometers:
2004 GP GT1: 249,447 KM = 155K miles
1999 GP GT: 313,821 KM = 195K miles
1998 Its on its second engine after the first one was blown prematurely by the previous owner.
Website used to convert the numbers: http://www.teaching-english-in-japan.net/conversion/miles

I think the car you are looking at has lots of miles, errr I meant to say kilometers left in it.
My 99 is going strong and I expect to get 300K miles out of it before swapping out the engine. Same goes for my 2004, although starting the engine off with synthetic oil, I hope to get 350K miles out of it.
Common problems? Seems like the "biggies" from reading this website and experiencing a few of some of the following problems, wheel hubs, fuel pump, mass airflow sensor, crankshaft position sensor, rear exhaust manifold leaks and window motors. I probably missed a few others.

That is an ambiguous question in which you will receive a wide variety of answers. Having said that we have members on this forum with well over 200K miles. The highest I have seen to date was around 320K miles which is a '97 GT model. The Series II 3800 engine whether the L36 or L67 versions is one of best engines ever made by GM regardless of the known issues. :grinyes:

That would be about 331,000 miles by this weekend. I love this thing.

Wally, long time no hear from, how's life treating you?

The Grand Prix is a pretty reliable car. It has it's PITA problems, but none that would stop me from buying another. So far, my 99 GT has only needed regular maintenance, a power steering pump and soon a blower motor (it's been whistling, but now its growling). Other than that, I love it, and it's about to roll 100k miles.
