Use decal wetter?

Is it necessary to use decal wetter (eg. Micro Sol setting solution) for waterslide decals?
Would it prevent the decals from getting brittle over time? Or is a clearcoat enough?

it does help to soften the decals to bend round corners etc.
not sure if it stops them getting brittle though
