I'm thinking of towing a pop-up camper with my 2002 Taurus.

I've noticed with kids in the backseat and the trunk full, the rear end sits quite low.

Should I upgrade the rear suspension for towing a pop-up? Can anyone suggest the proper upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help

Not only will you need to upgrade your shocks and struts, you will also have to upgrade your hubs, not many will agree with me but from past expirences you will break a hub, it will be expensive, and you will hate yourself later i have done it once, and so has my brother before me, i didnt listen and payed (cracked the axle too, very old axle though so i had to replace that too) I personally would get a new axle too just so the load can be better pulled and supported but it doesnt HAVE to be done at least not to my knowledge. Hope this helps, if you need any help with an upgrade pm me, i will see what i can help you with!

Why would you need trailer brakes? As you will soon learn, towing a heavy trailer of any kind is not to be entered into lightly and, simply put, if you do it wrong it can kill everyone in the vehicle. Got your attention now? Good. RV & camper sales dealers have the info you need so let them do a work up for you on what you need and cost of the proper hitch. Like the link says, you'll be hauling precious cargo and taking a chance just isn't worth it plus if you have trouble on the road it could make your good time vacation into a bad time big bummer.

We had a Ford F-150 King Cab V8 and a small pop-up and all I did was put a trailer ball on the bumper and hook it up and boogie. BUT, heck of a lot of difference in a F-150 and a Taurus and it was just the wife, me and lil' doggie.

You should check your owners manual. See how heavy of a trailer it says you can haul and how much tounge weight your vehical can support. Then check to see if your trailer falls within these guidlines. If the tounge weight is to much but the trailer doesn't exceed the maximum trailer weight you might get away with suspension upgrades. If the trailers overall weight exceeds the car's maximun trailer weight capabilities then you really shouldn't tow it with that car at all. You'll find the trailer is running the show and the car isn't. Even if your trailer has brakes but is still overweight for your car you could suffer some transmission or engine problems. If its overweight and doesn't have brakess then your going to find out that you don't have brakes either.
