Possible transmission problem

I have no troubles getting the car to shift into any of the gears. What I do have a problem with is this. Here's the detailed story.

I get gas at a local gas station. Head off to college. While I'm shifting gears and yes...I know how to drive a standard. while shifting gears...I notice when I give it gas, the RPM's start going higher, as if I wasn't even in gear at all. I have to let off the gas, to let the RPM's go down, and then give it gas SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLY and eventually, when I gain the speed, I can shift into gear no problem. I think it's my transmission slipping....OR...could be that Mr. Abeeb Abdullah Abdool put water in his f'ing gas tanks and the car is mis-firing....has anyone had this before?

I have a '00 Tiburon, 5 speed.

I dont "ride the clutch"..meaning when I slow down, I put it in Neutral as much as I can when I am braking for a long distance. This wouldn't mess up my tranny or gear ratio's would it?

How expensive are we talking for a clutch replacement?

I don't smell anything burning..so I didn't think it was the clutch. it shifts fine into gears...no grinding or anything. Thats something else that told me it couldnt be the clutch. i am just guessing here.


i was told though....that it could be the clutch...it could also be the throw-out bearing...and it could also be the pressure plate gone bad. either way....i'm screwed it looks like.

I forgot to mention....that I can sit in 1st gear or ANY gear for that matter....and let off the clutch entirely...and it won't stall nor die on me. It wont jerk like it is supposed to. there is no "grabbing" when you put it in any gear and drive....it just sits there like it's in neutral. :icon16: i like tiburons...but i'm tired of putting money into cars that need stupid crap like this when i get it from someone who doesnt know how to drive a stinking manual transmission the right way. :banghead:

that's the clutch right there, or at least it's clutch/pressure plate related, don't know the price as I do the work myself so only the part cost is involved...

Just to update - it was my clutch that went out. I went to Autozone, bought a clutch kit....$212.00 and having it put in. :banghead: I sure hope that lasts for a long time.

Can anyone tell me....does my flywheel HAVE to be "turned" - Sent out to a machine shop and 'turned'?? Or is that just something the mechanics do to get you to pay more money? And....I don't know...but this one mechanic wants to charge me $800-$900 to put in that new clutch, change tranny fluid, have the flywheel turned and all that crap. I think he's retarded. Anyone else run into this kind of problem? (paying that kind of money to have a clutch put in? Or does $150 sound like a reasonable deal? :dunno:

800-900$ for a clutch install, flywheel turned and fluid change is just a big rippoff, don't go there, that's more around the prices of 300$.

Yeah I figured I was getting ripped off. I had another '00 Tiburon before and it overheated and blew up on me...but anyways...he charged me $800 to do it before and so I figured he wanted to charge me the same price as before just to rip me off.
