I'm a college student looking for a reliable car and I came across a 96 Toyota Corolla in good condition. The only thing that worries me is that the car has 226,353 miles on it. The owner told me that a Corolla can last up to 400,000 miles, is that true?:uhoh:

Thats a lot of miles, but toyotas have been known to last to the 200K. Unless he's selling it dirt cheap, thats a little too many miles IMO.

I still see plenty of '96 Corolla's on the road. Best thing as always is to get it checked out by a mechanic. An Ex-Coworker of mine bought a Lexus ES '92 with over 300k miles on it. It ran ok for awhile but eventually got starter and transmission problems. Since he doesn't work with us anymore I don't know if it still runs ok.

The key factor here is price ? and condition, I would pay up to $1500 to $ 1800. if vehicle passed my inspection and hopefully provide me with a year of no mechanical problems.

Go to this link on my website http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html it will teach you how to test drive a car for value, if you feel satisfied then please make deal subject to an independent inspection by a mechanic, if seller wont allow you must walk away. how much is seller asking ?

Have a trusty mechanic look at the car and see if it has been taken care of and the engine is in good condition. Personally, I wouldn't have any problem picking up a Toyota with that many miles if I was looking for a small car provided I am satisfied with its condition. With that many miles I would be very concerned about the condition of the tranny if it is still the original one.
