Brake lights don't work. . .

Hello. Just bought 95 Riviera and the brake lights won't come on when I apply the brakes, but the center safety light comes on. The bulbs are fine because they come on when I hit the hazzard light button. A friend of mine said the brake stop switch under the dash is not the problem, but it could be the turnsignal multiswitch behind the steering wheel. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks.

the brake and the hazard are not the same element, keep checking the bulbs. the center light comes on the brake switch is working. it the bulbs are good, check for corrosion in the plug and the bulb socket and also the ground.

Just my thoughts on your problem.

The brake and hazards are the same element. It sounds like the turn signal switch or wirinf at the switch.

Hello. I fixed it with a new mult-switch. What a pain.

Howdy,

I have a 95 Riv with the exact same issue. Center light works, turn signals and everything else works, but none of the rear brake lights work. Also since I started messing around with it, the drivers side tail lights went out. I checked bulbs wiring etc.. and it was all good. It sounds like this mult-switch you are talking about is my issue.. Is this the turn signal switch. If so, the only one I have found is $400, is that what you paid? How hard was it to replace??

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

The hazard button IS definately tied into the brake lights, The riv's have a reputation of brake light failure due to a faulty hazard switch. Sometimes messin with the switch can give you a temporary fix but it will eventually need replaced. I have also found the brake switch off the brake pedal to go bad, be sure to check that too and either one of those will most likely be the prob. If it is the hazard switch there will be no brake lights but the center will always work. And if everything does not light it is the pedal switch.
