Check for wiring and the plug at the dash.

I had that checked already, someone told me it might be the wiring cluster, but didn't tell me which wiring cluster. So if somone could help me out with which wiring cluster it might be, I would greatly appreciated. Thanks

GM has a notorious issue with their instrument panel clusters not working correctly- 2003 to 2006 trucks are usually victim to this. The problems i've seen are primarily the speedometer needle sticking, movement of the needle being very notchy/rough, or completely inoperative while all the other gauges DO work. Other times, it will be stuck at say 50 mph while you're sitting still, and then it keeps incrementing when you start driving and gets stuck at 120 mph. Cycling the key on-off several times will usually bring the speedo needle close to zero again.

If this is your issue, then your instrument panel cluster (the odometer/speedometer/gauges assembly) needs to be replaced. There are problems with the stepper motors that control the needles being mechanically stuck.

The other issue i've seen is that on startup, the entire gauge display is completely inoperative (absolutely nothing works), but other times, everything is fine. This is a different issue than the one above. This problem of all gauges being inop intermittently can usually be corrected with a software update that the dealer can perform. (free if it's under warranty, probably an hour labor if it's out of warranty).

Hello fellows,

I've got about the same problem on my GMC Sub'99 C1500.
Lately the oil gage started flickering down to "0" and at the same time light "check gages" came on. So it is intermittently on and off, not constant as of yet. Oil changes as usual: 3500-4100mls, no skip; engine sounds normal.

I stop by at Autozone and let them check.
They found O2 sensor misreading(???).

So I assuming it is may be the same cluster soldering issue as one that I fixed in my Neon'95 a couple of weeks ago by re-heating some points on the cluster.
At the same time and also kinda randomly I have some rattling sound, like small teeth plastic gear rattle. And nothing goes wrong with the truck by now(knocking on wood).
So if anyone experienced something like this I'd like to see resolution.

Happy driving to everyone!

The problem is most likely your stepper motors. They can be replaced if you are skilled at a little delicate soldering. I fixed mine and saved about $400.00 vs. replacing the cluster. I ordered all 6 motors on E-bay for ablut $35.00. Contact David at http://www.speedometerrepairguy.com Hope this helps.

Thanks Chop,

I've checked the store but have not call David yet. I've search eBay - nothing appears for my year and make.

The rattling is pretty annoying now, plus today something dies. Yesterday "CES" comes to the cluster but car where driving as usual, then in a second halve of day the saign has gone, so I was thinking it's cold start or I've checked battery - ok, now removed the alternator and heading to Advanced AutoParts.

I'll post how things are rolling.
Thanks.

Delphi settles GM parts issue

Company pays $100M to mend warranty issues and agrees to replace 1.1M electronic parts.

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Delphi Corp. will pay General Motors Corp. at least $100 million to settle long-standing disputes over warranty issues and also will replace 1.1 million electronics parts -- worth more than $80 million -- at no charge as part of a wide-ranging agreement between the companies.

The settlement, reached Aug. 14 and made public late Thursday, opens a window into the costs GM has incurred in dozens of recall campaigns as a result of parts supplied by its former parts unit. GM has blamed dozens of warranty claims on shoddy Delphi parts, especially electronics.

The companies won U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval to release only an edited copy of the agreement. The agreement resolves all outstanding issues between the companies and sets the stage for Delphi to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the end of the year. Troy-based Delphi has filed a final reorganization plan.

Since GM spun off Delphi in 1999, the automaker has had many disputes with the company over warranty claims.

GM spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem said Friday that the agreement "clears the slate" between Delphi and GM "and resolves a certain group of outstanding warranty issues."

She said the agreement covers as many as 50 warranty issues; the settlement refers to at least 43 warranties.

The major issue resolved involves 1.1 million electronic parts that are part of instrument clusters, according to a heavily edited version of the agreement that has been made public. The instrument cluster is the electronic brain behind the instrument panel on the dash.

With the agreement and an improving relationship with Delphi, GM hopes to save $2 billion annually in parts costs.

As Delphi exits several businesses, GM will represent a diminishing share of its revenue -- down to a quarter or less than $5 billion by 2010.

Delphi attorney Jack Butler said the agreement saves Delphi "hundreds of millions of dollars in potential liability."

Defective parts replaced

Under the deal, GM will receive $47.5 million to replace defective electronic parts and Delphi will provide 1.1 million new parts at no charge through 2014.

In addition, GM will have a right to buy additional parts at no more than $83 each.

For instrument clusters equipped with Switec stepper motors, Delphi also will provide bulbs and motors at its cost.

In another issue, Delphi will pay GM $175 per repair for up to 107,000 vehicles -- or as much as $18 million. GM would not divulge what part is involved.

Delphi also may sue a supplier over one of the defective parts. If successful, the company has agreed to give GM part of any proceeds exceeding $8 million.

During the dispute, GM withheld $5.4 million in parts payments from Delphi. Delphi won't seek the payment.

Meanwhile, two GM investigations into other allegedly defective parts by Delphi remain ongoing, "and GM has not yet determined if Delphi has any responsibility," according to the agreement.

Mike,

Thanks for the information. I am pretty sure about call them.

Getting back to C1500 death. Alternator were checked ok, so I dive down and took starter out. Advanced Auto guy shows me some insignificance in gaining under load, so verdict: dead. Ok, $104 with core exchange. Started with a bit chewing sound and in 2-3 minutes dies again. So I check the cables, put some protective grease over, started again - works ok. Driving second day normal.

Thanks for everyone for their participation.
Happy miles!
