I have a 1993 toyota pickup, 22RE engine, the engine would not run except on 1 cylinder, had it at toyota for 4 days they said they could not figure out what was wrong. My brother told me to check the throttle body, it was heavly carboned, removed the throttle body, air chamber, intake manifold. cleaned them replaced them. Now I am having problems starting, have to start vehicle 5 or 6 times before it will run. After it warms up it hesitates and looses power on hills. Also the check light will not flash codes it just stays on when doing a manuel check. the check light goes out when the vehicle is started. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong.

You've actually posted this in the Isuzu Rodeo forum.

BUT, I used to have the 22RE Toyota in an '85 p/up for 21yrs; so I might be able to help.

You didn't say how many miles?? Has the timing chain been replaced at all, I'm assuming you're quite a bit above 100k??

Has the truck overheated *at all*?? Even the slightest - does NOT take much to blow the headgasket on this engine, TRUST me, did it 3 times. If the head/block is cracked, this engine will run terribly.

If you can, respond back to this thread, as I don't visit the Toyota forum on this website much and I might otherwise forget about you.

Timing chain good..in the sense of it has been replaced at least once?? If not, I can assure you it's wearing or worn out. Our truck lost a boat-load of power, even though the chain looked good.

My advise, if you're not working on this truck yourselves, get a 2nd opinion; and don't bank on just one compression check; check it again.

Things I would look at, again, double check tightness of the spark plugs/gap, distributor/wires, cat convertor - make sure it's not clogged, O2 sensor (I had only one on my '85; if your's has never been replaced, it's toasted).

How old is that thermostat & radiator?? - not saying these are reasons for running poorly, just double checking their age, as these parts are far past shot at 9-10yrs of age in this particular engine.

Also, did you replace the intake manifold gasket when you had it off?
