painting help

hi guys,
im new to modelling and i bought my first car and its a mp4/20 mclaren mercedes.
my question is that in the instructions sheet about the paint it says that part G has a percentage of 80% black and 20% gold. whats does it mean???

Hi and welcome to the forum.

They want you to mix 80% black with 20% gold together not sure what that’s going to look like. You might want to look for some reference pictures of the car and look at those parts in the photos them determined what the best color for that part might be. That what I do for I do not always like the color the instructions recommend.

It means that you need to mix a paint colour that is 80% black and 20% gold. For example, if you wanted to mix 10ml of paint, you would measure out 8ml of black paint, add 2ml of gold paint and stir them together.

However, I think that Revell is using that colour mixture to represent carbon fibre, so you may want to use carbon fibre decals instead. If you haven't already, you need to find reference photos to check that this is the case.

It means that for all parts to be painted in color G, mix four parts black and one part gold. Ideally this should be sprayed on with an airbrush, but you may have some luck painting it on by hand.

It looks like this is how Revell is recommending that bare carbon fibre components should be painted. Black/gold or black/silver is actually a decent representation of CF parts.

If you look at the suspension arms and front edge of the wing, they're shiney gloss black, but in light they look slightly metalic and have 'stripes' visible. This is bare CF.

Another popular option is to use carbon fibre decals- decals printed with thin black and metallic stripes or dots. However this is a somewhat advanced technique, and may be more than you want to take on for your first build.

another thing is that i dint have an airbrush nor spray cans.just enamel colours in pots and some brushes.Coz i was in germany and saw the kits and was going to buy the airbrush with a compressed can of gas but i couldnt get it on the plane so i didnt buy it

It means that the color of paint you need isn't made or sold by Revell and you need to mix it on your own, from black paint and gold paint. If you want to mix up just a little, mix four drops of black with one drop of gold. If you want to mix alot, mix four litres of black paint with one litre of gold paint (but only if you think you need five litres of this color).

Enamels mix pretty well and brush OK, so you can do this painting by hand.

If you don't want to go through the effort of mixing your own paint color here, just paint everything that is supposed to be color G in gloss black.

I just joined to ask this same question. From pictures online I cannot see a difference between other people's finished kit.

Most of the bottom half of the car is black gloss, so I may just try and find a metallic black for these parts, or put a tiny drop of aluminium in the black.
