Ok when my E23 (735i 1985) starts up from cold, it seems unable to hold the revs when idle, causing it to stall, this seems only to happen when it is cold, therefore I have to keep revving it. It rarely happens when it is hot, any one got an idea on what might be wrong or is it just cause it is an old car?

How are you on the maintenance of this car? If you haven't given your car a tune-up, it would be beneficial to do that. Other than that, if the problem persists, it could just be because of age. Like most cars that get very old and don't start on the first crank of the key.

The car is fully maintained, it is probably just to do with age. Someone told me that it could be to do with the variable value solenoid ?

Well, I wouldn't worry too much if it only happens once it is cold and upon start up. If after the car is warm, it shows no symptoms, I wouldn't worry about it.

even though the engine has been maintained well you might have incorrect spark plugs . if you own A U.S. spec. model the only plugs that will work i a Bosch WR9LS any other plug will cause running problems.

you might also try a high quality valve cleaner . pick up a case at the bmw dealer its really cheap and it works.
p.s. a tune-up always includes a valve adjustment.

Sounds like an AFM adjustment to me. Here is a link to do that, care of KC Ron Carter:
