My 2002 Alero has been failing to turn over when the key is turned . This is an intermittent problem which began last winter. Last Feb. I had it into the dealer as it was sometimes taking 3 or 4 or more attempts before the engine would turn over and start. They could not find any codes and couldn't duplicate the problem. The car has full warranty with GMAC and they just wouldn't start hanging new parts on it since it was not my money. I got a rental (GMAC) and they kept the car for several days and still nothing. It has been fine all summer and just now started doing this again a few days ago. The battery is new and fully charged and the headlights will come on brightly and still nothing when the key is turned until after multiple attempts it will turn over and pop right off.
The warning lights all go out when the car starts as normal. If anyone can help me here I would greatly appreciate it.

Before starting the engine, turn the ignition to the ON position and wait. Monitor the "SECURITY" or "ANTI THEFT" warning light. If the light continues to flash for more than 5 seconds, the engine will likely not start.

When turning on the ignition, you can also listen for the fuel pump to run its two-second prime cycle. If the pump does not run, the engine will likely not start.

You might pass along your observations to your service department to help them pinpoint the problem(s).

Today it will not turn over with a fully charged battery and the security light does not flash and goes right out. What do you think is wrong?

I had the same, if not similar problems occur with my 2000 GL 2.4 this summer. I tried all the ideas on the forums as well, with the whole 10 min thing, replacing my key, new battery, new spark plugs. We checked the fuses, the sensors, fuse box and so on. At one point we did test the ignition switch per the Haynes manual and it did beep on each test with the voltmeter, which meant to us that it was getting current. After a month of pulling out my hair and thinking it was possibly my fuel pump going. We decided to go back and psychically take out the ignition module and put in another one from a junkyard, before making a large purchase on a new fuel pump.

My car has worked great ever since!!

My father took apart the ignition module and found corrosion on the contacts which was causing it to not function 100%. I am not a mechanic, just an Alero owner who wanted to try and fix the problem on their own with the aid of my father.

The cost of the ignition module was $10 from the junkyard. He put my old locking cylinder into the “new” ignition module so I didn't have to use a separate key.

Like I said I'm not a mechanic, just an Alero owner with limited funds. I hope this info can help someone.
