Digital Speedometer Trouble 95

I have a 95 L99 with the dreaded digital speedometer.

90% of the time its black, not on at all. Every once in a while it will pop on and seems to be accurate and it is very bright so I don't think my problem is in the connectors behind the dash since it isn't faded/fading. I'm not sure if the odometer is keeping track of the mileage when its not on because it only comes on every few months and I never write it down. Though, I'm pretty sure the Trip is working while its off, so the Odometer probably is too.

Sometimes it comes on when I start the car up, and then fades to black withing a minute or so. Sometimes it goes off when put in gear, mostly reverse.

Occasionally when I run it through a car wash that does the undercarriage, I will notice at the end of the wash my speedometer will be on, but never stays lit up for more than a day.

My guess is the speed sensor, but I'm not sure where its located or what it looks like. Luckily for me, my brother works at an auto parts store and showed me today a speedsensor for my car, but I just didn't think it looked right, it has a rubber washer around it and an almost magnetic like peice that would go down into... whatever it goes into, with a small bracket coming off one side on the top where the connection port is.

I'm assuming the sensor is on the back end and on top of the transmission near the driveshaft (I'm about to put the car up on ramps and see if I can find it.)

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

After looking under the car, I found a single wire running to the topside on the back of the tranny, couldn't see the connection, and when trying to twist my hand around to get in there, only came out with a good ammount of gunk on my hand.

Happened to look back at the tail end of the driveshaft and on the differential there is a something that could be(and I hope it is) the speed sensor, it seems a bit smaller than the one I looked at earlier today, but its got the same type of brackett and looks similiar, just smaller.
