95 3.5l water leak

i got a 1995 3.5l that started to over heat. after looking for the leak it seemed to be leaking from the snout. After consulting a Chilton's, i would guess that the water pump seal has gone bad. Since it is behind the timing cover, i assume that it is leaking out the only place it can. the snout. any incite would be helpful. If so, any tricks to deal with the timing belt without removing the balancer?
