A THM 350 can handle quite a bit of power, i would rebuild it and have a transgo noyoyo shift kit installed.

All turbo 350s where manufactured the same. ( when they where new, from '69 to '86)Its a matter of the guy rebuilding the transmission that makes it different. Unless you blow at least $5K on your motor, you won't get over 250 horsepower. Any Turbo 350 could handle this easily, stock. For a long time. Unless, some abusive driving was going on. Simple as that :)

That being said. An over fueled small block, does not break a transmission. The driver does.

Unless the transmission was just installed and failed within a block of the starting point of road test. The pump is not bad. 350's have a georotor pump. it needs to take a direct hit from an installer to screw it up. Unlike the 700R4.

Its probably much more worse than a simple pump. I would have to say.
But a pressure test would confirm pump output, or not :)

oh, it was my fault, i know ! I just bought the car a day before it happened and was showin out for a friend. put it netural got it to 4 rpms and dropped it to first and heard a poppin sound about like a firecracker. it of course wouldn't move forward or reverse, and has a slight grinding noise when you try to put it in park. a friend told me that he thought i burnt the pump.(i don't know)
i thank you for all advice!

Are you certain its an LT1? That would make the motor at least 10 years newer than the car. Was it swapped in or something?

The way you make it sound, im thinking the transmission isnt rebuildable. A neutral drop often messes them up so bad they are not buildable again.

The last time i priced a transmission pump, it was like 30 bucks. The last transmission i rebuilt was $150.00 for parts (my cost), plus labor wich is i think around $60x8hr+150 parts. They end up taking me longer than they are supposed to usually, so i go by what the book time is and if it takes longer i lose money/time.

not exactly...

For $2000.00 you can send an engine to a good machine shop and have much more power than 250HP using all stock parts.

And for the 4k I spent you can pump out a lil over 400hp. You can buy a complete engine for 3.5k that puts out 360hp (TPI setup)
For his 5k example I would expect no less than 450hp at the crank.

well i did know that the lt1 was a newer engine than 82 but i was told thats what was put in it.
here the list;
Lt1 350 corvette motor
new-vortec fastburn heads
new-holley 650 double-pump carb.
new-lanati 292/480 camshaft
new-edelbrock vortec intake
new- 1.5 roller rockers
new-water pump, alternator, and starter
new edlbrock aluminum valve covers
rebuilt 350 trans.w/shift kit
456 gears in rear-end
the motor and all look really good. i mean i would not have bought the car if it did not run and sound good but it is up-setting that the trans is shot! this is why im tring to figure out the horses, so i need help figuring out whats the right trans. to put in...

If its got all that i would go with a 6 speed std, or at least AOD, (something with 0.70 or < @ final gear as opposed to the 350's 1.0 final) and lose that awful gear ratio. All that gearing your top speed must be like 80-90 mph W/O OD.

really? the gear ratio throws me , but i do like the standard idea. how ever i'm wanting to go back w/auto.
what do i do to change gear ratio? how much are money are we talking to change that?
what kinda gear ratio is better?

one option is to look into a gear splitter... rock crawlers use them to get steeper gears but you can get them to go the other way and get an overdrive unit.

you could have the gears in the rear end changed. right now it's setup for strip use only, no street use.

you could put a T56 borg and warner trans in it for a 4th gen, your looking at around $1500 and alot of work. (mount clutch pedal assembly and cut hole in floor, change crossmember, maybe mod exhaust to start)

the pump is not bad in the tranny, you blew up something. could be alot of things, ujoints are the cheapest possiblity, did you look underneath yet?
otherwise, input/output shaft, torque convertor bolts sheared are things that come to mind.

the engine can be pulled and dyno'd, retuned and then have a tranny built for it now that you know what the engine will do. without knowing where the engine has it's power it's hard to say what stall to use...

seek out a good shop, you'll need some help from a pro.

If you were to get a 700r4 transmission your top speed would be better and it will still have some off the line jump. Since the transmission is what wrong, might as well consider it an upgrade AND repair and go ahead and give it an overdrive transmission.

As for the axle gears, depending on the application would decide wich gear to go with. I prefer 3.73 or 4.10 with AOD, and 2.73 or 3.08 without OD.
