2001 Radio screen keeps going off

Does anyone know what may be causing the radio screen to keep going off? Nissan said that I have to replace the radio (the volume knob doesn't work too well either) I believe that it is just a short some where but before I play, I was wondering if anyone would know what I should be looking for first.

Thanks

Seems the unit has to be taken out, opened. Most electronics problems are contact problems: open/clean connector(s) to the front panel, try ... then forget all that, throw also out CD's and buy a new better one with usb (maybe 150$ but not at Nissan).

These things are pretty solid state. (meaning non-servicabe) If you know anyone with a late 80's vintage ford I doubt the stock radio display illuminates. Bulbs are soldered to a circut board. If your a real good electronics technician you could put in new bulb but usually just toss and buy a new one.

....your a real good electronics technician you could ....

This is good trainin materiel to get there: 12V poses no hazard except if u happen to swallow the batt... After learnin/destroying/dissembling few units, one learns what not to do =almost there.

Just buy an after market stereo and re-wire the system. It's cheaper. Or you can just buy the replacment part on ebay. There are some dealers there that will buy your old stereo off you when you buy from them.

Just buy a replacement on ebay thats what i did. The dealer is charging over $1000 for this unit. I had 2 maximas and after I got in an accident with them both the cd player fails. I bought mines from this guy:

he includes instalation instructions.

Hi,

Havent posted in a while but...

The radio is getting worse, the screen basically will not go on at all anymore, the volume/power button doesnt really work either. So, can anyone advise of a good (i.e. not too expensive) radio with cd, that may work with the changer in the trunk and fits nicely, and/or a good radio that encompasses the above that would also have a nav built in?

Thanks

There are literaly thousands out there that will do exactly what you describe you want. The changer in the trunk is a Clarion (if us model, I did not look where u were from). Remove old head unit (radio in the dashboard) and look at the type of connector that runs into the back of it from the changer. This will be the thickest wire/plug going into the back of the unit. (black) Make a makeshift picture (or take digipic) of what the head unit connector looks like and bring with you to u'r local Clarion head unit dealer (best buy?) and you may be in luck.

I'll say it again! Ebay replacement man! Expecially if you dont want to spend a lot of money. You really can find them for cheap you just have to look.

Yes, undoubtitly cheap is ebay, but you may find that the clarion head unit purchased on ebay does not work at all. Buyer beware at ebay. And if that thick black wire from the trunk does not fit, no recourse from ebay. If u'r not going to keep the car get an ebay head unit, if your sure about the tunes then get a clarion from the local clarion dealer.

Thanks BeZerK,

I just bought an ebay OEM radio. I'll let you know how it turns out. I looked in to a buch of aftermarkets especially at crutchfield, but they are a bit on the expensive side. Also, they all need a special harness to fit, and I have always thought that no matter how ggod the system is, those harnesses make the whole thing look cheap.

Thanks again

In addition if you have the bose system you have to do a lot of special wiring to get am aftermarket to work. If you going to replace a maxima stereo, you should get nothing but a double dinn. Everything else looks stupid. Glad to hear you got one though.

I understand what rather_b_boatin was saying, but he was talking about aftermarket decks. I was talking OEM. Big difference.

You can still sell you old deck on ebay. There are a lot of people looking for a deck for replacement parts. Just make sure you clearly state whats going on in the auction and you'll be fine.

Good luck!

Before I try to put this radio in, does anyone know if I need any security codes?
