Hey everyone my 99 alero 3.4 will crank but wont start, all lights and locks are shut down in car. I replaced the ignition switch but the car still stallls out after about 1 or two seconds. I dont no what else to do, the car was running fine the day it shut down, I didnt get any warnings of passlock issues. If there is any advice out there that you all can help me out with please help me. Thanks

There are any number of issues that could be the cause of a "cranks but won't start" issue.

A couple of things to check are if the fuel pump is providing proper fuel pressure, and are the cylinders getting spark? This may help identify if the problem is related to ignition or fuel not getting to the engine. The other thing and probably most helpful is to see if you can get someone with a scanner to check for stored codes.

Was the ignition switch replacement done after getting a code or in response to passlock issues?

Hopefully, these will at least provide you a starting point.

Naw the fuel pump works just fine, infact its been replaced. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter , and regulator. I just no that the security light comes on and stays on when I out the key in the car. When I installed the new ignition, i tried the relearn technique, but still no luck. what do I do, I dont have enough money to pay a delaer for work I can do myself.

The trouble is the bcm (body control module) it is under the dash on the passenger side of the car. It is a little black box right by the blower motor, it has three plugins on it a pink , grey , blue , depending on the year .What happens is the cowl on those cars leak down through the blower motor vent and water gets in the bcm. This ruins the bcm and sets the security and shuts down the fuel injectors, stero, cab lights ,ect... Replace the bcm and relearn it with the procedure the same as the ignition cylinder and it will start.

Phillip,

Sounds like you replaced the ignition switch instead of the key cylinder. The key cylinder has a chipo in it that is usually the cause of the security problem. Replacing the actual electrical switch will have no bearing on the sensor in the cylinder. If you decide to replace, or already have, the actual cylinder, it should accept a relearn.

Is there anyway to test a the cykinder and BCM becuase im pulling them from salvage, which is goging to save me alot of money. The ignition switch would cause my lights and trunk to stop working.

NO START SOLUTION: 2000 Alero, 2.4L, turns over but doesn't start, security light turns on then off then after a few seconds light turn back on SOLID, SOLUTION: repaired corroded terminals on BCM (located on passengers side under the dashboard). Humidity from blower or other source leaked onto terminals and coroded them away. They symptoms actually started months ahead of time. First the door locks stoped working, then the door chimes and lights, finaly the car failed to start. It would turn and run for about a second and then die out. The security light would remain on solid. The 10 min reset doesn't work in this case.
