Late Shifting

I'm not real experienced with cars but I'm pretty sure what is happening here isn't right. When I accelerate my '99 Grand Am any faster than "pulling out of the driveway" speed, my RPM's get up to anwhere between 4000 and 7000 before it will shift. It seems like the faster I accelerate, the higher the RPM's get before it will shift into second.

Sometimes it seem like it doesn't even plan on shifting. Once it gets to about 7k I don't want to push it anymore so i take a little pressure off of the accelerator and THEN it shifts. There's no way this can be good, and i'm not sure what the problem is.

I'm not sure if this is related, but also when I'm on the highway and I'm going about 60 or so, about to pass, I accelerate as quick as possible but it seems like the car jsut barely starts to accelerate. Then in a few seconds of flooring it with no response, the engine kicks in, the RPM's fly up and I get a lot of horsepower all very suddenly.

What do you guys think this could be? I'm hoping it doesn't mean that my entire transmission is killed.

I would TOW it to a trans shop or the stealership ASAP !!!

You probley have a shift solenoid out,
and you very well could have toasted the trans running it already :yikes:

Not a cheap trany to rebuild or replace unless you do the work your self.

Any idea on how expensive that might be?

I actually purchased the car less than 2 weeks ago so it's still under warranty but the guy at the dealship is trying to tell me I might have to pay for half. I'm going to avoid that at all costs because the whole situation is kind of ridiculous.

Anyways, I'm bringing it down to the shop within a week, hopefully this saturday.

It depends on what they find wrong. If you need a complete rebuild you are looking between 1700 and 1800 dollars. If it is just a solenoid then about $500 depending on what is going on. I would check your warranty closely as you may get stuck with part of the bill. Depending on where you live may determine the outcome of the cost. Don't wait, get it checked ASAP due to the fact that the longer you wait the harder it will be to get the warranty to cover the cost.

I just recently rebuilt/replaced one of these 4T45's in my SE and they are whimpy :thumbsdow

I did what I could to beef it up.
In the end I spent around $2800, doing the work myself.

We'll see how long it lasts......
