My continental downshifts sluggishly and then a burning smell becomes apparent. This happens off and on. :frown:

Welcome Hallee !!
Since 1991, had this trans been inspected or had any service?
How many miles on the car?
Are you the original owner?

I have owned it 2 months. I assume it has been serviced. There are 96,000 miles.

I'm kinda wondering how you would 'notice' sluggish downshifting... harsh preempted down shifting is another story.. you'd notice that for sure as you peel yourself off the windshield.
Oh.. it's just came to me.. ARE YOU talking about acceleration kick down? That's another issue all together.
What kind of burning smell are you having? There's exhaust fumes, overloaded/shorted circuits, oil on pipes, trans. fluid, coolant on pipes, battery acid, rubber, brake pads, brake fluid ???? All of these have very distinctive odors.
Are you seeing any smoke associated with the burning? Anything dripping underneath?

Almost coming to a stop as it downshifts. Having to step on the gas to get going. The smell as close as I can say is rubber burning. I am told that if a trans slips that it can smell burned. The smell happens right after the problem. There is no smoke of any kind. Nothing under the hood. The smell lasts about 15-20 minutes. The trans seems to go back to normal after stepping on the gas. This has happened 2 times in 2 months. Ther is no leaking.
