I would realy like to hear from PaulD and pimprolla112 on this question but I want as many answers as possable.
If you had $1000 to spend on a just a sub system that is made to be a SPL system and it was going to be built in the back of a Toyota Tundra with all of the back seats removed, what would you get? I would like to know every thing such as amp, box, what kind and size of subs, and how it would be setup etc.
I am asking this because I might have an oppotunity to do this and I dont even have any ideas so I went to my primary source of info. Any ideas are welcome and wanted from anyone. And you can use the money on nething you would want in the truck as long as it makes a wickedly loud sub setup and looks good cause its not going to be hidden behind or under seats its out in the open.
Have fun with this one, and dont be shy type exactly what you would do in this situation.
Thanks Alot.

a couple of efficient 12's or 15's in a fart box with at least 1000 watts RMS. Of course I would never do this in any car I had, but if I had a friend I was helping out - that would be the most bang for the buck.

Umm I have one question, what is a fart box?
LoL, I gotta say, I was wondering the same. I dont really know how to take that? Maybe sarcasm , if so, + 500, it's funny. But I think you would want to probably go with DD, RE, Fi, ID, EDand maybe a solo-X. And personally, if your not goin to compete in SPL competitions, I would just go SQL sub. The above brands have some NICE ones. It would sound a whole lot better too. Your only goin to achieve a damaged ear the other way. Some of these subs will make so much noise (deisred), you wouldnt know the difference, except for the increased sound quality. It will be louder than you could actually listen to comfortably as a daily driver. Do you even have equipment that will even keep up with those vloumes (high end), or you just goin all factory and a helluva sub ?
Cause if you want strickly SPL , may not sound the best, just uncomfortably loud, and a waste IMO if your not competing. A lil more detail of where you had in mind to go is prolly necessary at this point.
But you might want to power that with a nice McIntosh, Audison, Zapko, Diamond, Butler, or even JL and few Old school amps from ol Zed (lol). Autotek, Lanzar, PPI, Orion, RF. And your box, is goin to be pretty big, sounds like its not a problem though. You might want to go ported, Personally I like the sound of sealed. Or if possible, a Fart Box (LoL)
And of course, to lightly touch on the Electircal system. You will need the big three with a HO alternator, and of course, the proper wiring kit. And LOTS of Dynamat !

a fart box is a box that is only good for one note... and normally a note that does not play well with a daily set up....meaning if you build a box and tune it to 55htz, and thats all that box is good for then it = fart box :D

and is this assuming you have a charing system capable to handle that because if you don't say hello to 8 to 9 volts. and are you talking about daily driver loud or over the top spl comp loud?

Um not exactly. What I want is a system that is loud and can be heard comming from a few blocks away. I just want it to be realy impressive and loud but sound good at the same time I just want to be able to show off my car and beat most systems that are in my town (in DB but not competition) and be know for sumthing like my system because ive been wanting to do this for sooo long. Cause the way I look at it you can only enjoy your first car once and I am not going to wish that I had a car that I could have been proud of when im like 50 because im not going to want blasting sound systems forever so I should take advantage of the time i have now cuz its not going to be forever. So pretty much what im saying is I want a sound system that I would be proud of and be able to show off and have it be a big thing but also be able to enjoy it myself soo I want it to be loud but sound good. I dont know how much sence that made or if it just sucked and srry bout the mistakes and parts that dont make sence I had like 3 minutes to type this. and do 15" Diamond Audio CM3's sound pretty good and can hit hard?
And I still would like to know what a fart box id or if you ment port.

To be perfectly honest, this is a real bad idea
Why can't you "enjoy" this forever? The reason you don't see older people doing it isn't because they can't, it's because they matured and realized it was a dumb idea. Damaging your hearing from something you can't even listen to the music you enjoy on...fantastic! You won't be proud of this when you get older, you'll be embarrased of it...that's assuming it doesn't get stolen, and the way you're describing your intentions, it will be, quickly.
Give it 1 month and I promise you'll be tired of it and wishing you spent the money on something you can actually listen to.
just my .02...do what you want

yep ... a fart box is also known as a johnny one note, they sound bad but are typically very efficient.
it's usually a relatively small ported box, often times the port(s) are on the the outside of the box to allow the box to even smaller..
It takes a good bit subs and power to be heard from several blocks away - good luck on that one.

I understand completely. When I was 16, I had a car with 4 -15's in a wall behind the front seats. I completely ripped out my back seats. I had a custom built box with Plexiglass in front. I had the proper high end to compensate as well as charging system. Needless to say, PLENTY WAY TOO LOUD, but at the same time souded crystal clear. I had alot of fun and everyone knew me. But, I warn you, some dumb ass is goin to eventually steal your shit, so make sure you have proper security and everything is covered on the insurance. Anyways, the Diamonds you mentioned are nice, but you woudl be better off getting one of the above brands, thier just better (providing you get the right series). Bandpass boxes IMO are nice, but are very hard to get down. IF someone knows what they are doin, Id say go for it, if not, stay AWAy from them. Just go ported, but make sure they can do that adequetaly. IF you need help, give your location, maybe someone knows someone there.

If you've already got the headunit and factory replacement speakers you want and now looking for crazy spl then I'd personally recommend using a 18" Kicker SoloX with a Hifonics xx Thor amp. If you shop around online you can find a good deal on them, just make sure that the vehicle can handle the power requirements. As for installation put it in a square ported box and either fiberglass the box or carpet it but also extend it to make it look like it belongs there and not just thrown in.

O.K. I am starting to think I want sql more than spl now. But I am still going to want probly more bass than is required.:] so for now im probably going to get the subs and headunit and get that set up and sounding like I want then im going to go in and replace everything else with better stuff so it will sound nice and then I can just turn down the bass and it should sound just fine but still be able to turn up the bass when I want and bang down the street so I could have a car that utillizes both spl and sql and I can choose between both depending on my mood. Can I do that or is that just a big car audio no no?

I would go with MA audio, if you look in db national, db drag compitions in many states they 1st 2nd and 3rd!

^wow bro that is alot of hate.... i mean i have a very loud set up and have for years and i enjoy it, and don't see why i would stop enjoying it :shakehead
As far as the ma comment..... not so much any more. MA dose not hold alot of db drag records any more. You will find that most people that are really loud use digital design subs with a power house mono block amp... When it comes to being really loud, its all about having the power available to the amps, and box design to back it up.... power is everything.
If i were you bro do what makes YOU happy, go to your local shop and listen to what they have at the shop. Find out what kinda setup YOU will enjoy, because everybody is different, and will tell you what to buy, and what to do. And nobody can make those kinda decisions for you. Go to a local car show, and ask people to demo there ride, most people are really happy to do it, and this offers an opportunity for you to find something that suits what you are wanting to do. Just my :2cents: worth

http://www.incriminatoraudio.com/li.htm
http://www.stereointegrity.com/Magnum12.html
As for amps
autotek
zapco
OLD PPI stuff
your going to have to search, but like stated putting something in a fart box will make it easier. you also have to keep in mind the cost for wiring, enclosure, and like stated problems with theft will be high. Bolt it down so when they go to move it and find out it wont budge they might take a different route, use odd screw shapes, like 2-torx bits, hex, square, etc, might make it a bitch to remove but they would get pissed when they get a set of screws out and find out they cant remove the rest.
Ex cab trucks are great for SPL, you have the subs right behind the seat and filling the cabin with sound/pressure is very considering how small it is compared to other vehicles. Your doing the right thing keep up research and make sure you know what you want before you buy anything ask questions. If you need an enclosure desing let me know i know a guy on another forum that can desing them, and hes pretty good.

Again, Diamonds are NICE subs, but the list that was provided, I think you will see better results. And the price is NOT bad for what you get. Hell, you can get one Fi BTL , SI MAG, Re, or DD sub, and Im sure if done right, you will be happy with the results, but 2 , well, that will be plenty sufficient. Memphis , Hiphonics, Autotek, or even planet Audio have some pretty decent stuff for really cheap. And with the Autotek, the white Old school 333 Mean Machine will do wonders.

O.K. thanks every body for your input. But what can I do to make sure its just about imposible to get my stuff stolen? I think it would be hard to steal a system that is in the mid gate of a Avalanch and that is what I hope my system will be in, but if it is in the back of the tundra with the back seats taken out, im sure just about every theif in a 10 mile radius of my house will know about it. But what can I do to make it imposible for anyone to steal it.

it's never impossible .... ever seen the movie "gone in 60 seconds" ? Fortunately, the average punk thief is just too lazy to get a job and sure as hell doesn't wanna get caught. Park it in a garage, or in a lighted area next to the house - not many choices at work I guess.
Use diffent types of security screws, one of each type on the four corners of the amp. Use carriage bolts for the box and security screws for the sub. ind ways to brace/anhor stuff down. Put a back strap on the hedunit. Every extra few seconds it takes them is more chance they get caught -especially if the alarm went off, even if they almost immediately ganked the battery wires.

Nothing personall, I had My 180lbs box from the floor to the roof. The Roof of the car actually curved over and came down below the edges of the box, securing it in place. I also had the center in the box bolted, not screwed, toghether. The box was bolted through the car with a plate that ran across the under carriage. So I had a huge plate/bar running across the car. Also, are you familiar with the lil diamond widowsn in the back of an 84 Monte Carlo ? Well I had Boxes built into those widow space & bolted to the main box. Ist was IMO unthievable. If that was not enough, I had a 400 $ alarm system with the works. Broad day light, at school, with Cameras all over the parking lot, and police officers patroling. I was jacked clean. these were proffesionals, so if they want it, THEY WILL GET IT ! :runaround: There is NOTHING you can do, only precautionary measures. Thats why I suggested to just make sure its insured.

Like never listening to it loud near your home, school or work, and making sure that ONLY your close friends know what you have. That means no showing off, no "reputation", the system is for you and you alone.

Sounds good in theory. And highly possible. I actually did have it under wraps for a long while. But after 2yrs or so, eventually everyone knew. But I was smart. I did not go around blasting, or advertising. My brother would when I let him borrow it. But at this point, everyone already knew, so I guess it didint matter. Its only a matter of time. How long that last, is soley up to the individual. If you can live with that, I would. It just seems thinks like that are hard to keep under raps. And perhaps you can, but its always someone else that will cross that line. But if you express to them the severity (which shoudl be recognized, conversation free) of the situation and the amount of cash you just dropped, and how its imperative notto advertise for you, great. If he is a good buddy, he will understand. But then, the hard part becomes you. Freinds, girls, popularity. And belive it or not, bitches will love it sounds and performs great. Course they wont know the difference, but they will notice your is better (LMAO). I dunno, maybe it was just the fact that I had a high profile car. It woudl seem you could keep it on the "DL" a lil longer if you dont have extrodinary everything.
Well im getting my sysetm for me and only me so I think I might be able to handle not telling any except for some of my realy good friends. And im probly going to use the weirdest screws I can find. But what is a security screw? And nobdy answered this earlier, is it possible to have a spl\sql car? I want some crazy loud bass, but when I want sound quality (after I replace every thing with some nice three ways and get it how I like) I can turn the sub down till it sounds right. I dont see why you cant have a realy good sounding car (when you want) and be able to shake cars around you for blocks(when you want). So is my theory possible, or has some one tried it and it just dosent work out, because I never, well I wont say never but I rarley see people that just are O.K. with having both. Usualy people are like "SPL is for people that dont care about music and just want to be annoying and powerfull", or "SPL is for panzies that dont know how to enjoy music they way it should be enjoyed". This may be doing a huge audio no no but I just wanted to know what yall thought about it.

I belive the tern you are looking for , is SQL. The difference is, it will always hit hard, and will always sound good. You will always have best of both worlds. NOt really a switch you can just turn off. And trust me, you get 1 or of the DD, or ID, SI, RE subs, it will be plenty if done correctly. What I mean by plenty, is WAY TOO MUCH ! I had 4 -15's in a 84 Monte Carlo. IT got WAYY TOO LOUD, and yet sounded GREAT ALWAYS, period. Hell, I coudlnt even make it sound bad.
And of course, A good product always helps, but mostly depends on build quality, setup, and install. Oh, and if possible, use those screws you find in public bathrooms. You know, its like a phillips screw, but only 1/2. Its done to where you can screw in , but not out. Now, of course, I dont know how that will affect later when you want ot take it out. .. . but if your worried, go that route (lol).
And I dont know why the illusion that you cant have SPL and SQ, Thats SQL. SQ with tons of sound pressure. It is what you seek, and trust me, do it right, it will be more than you bargained for. A dude just hit like freakin 170 + with 1 DD sub. You prolly couldnt even be in the cabin during that, it woudl prolly make your head explode. Thats like 2 Jet engines goin off in yoru living room ! Im sure you have not even heard anything to this level. It will be more than enough.

Ok. so I could get one 15" DD sub and it would be as loud or louder than 2 15" diamond Audio CM3's? And how much do they cost I was looking at the 3500 I think and they look like a fortune?

I woudl go with 3500, 9100, or 9500 series. You wont be sorry. Just make sure to have someone put it in the right box. Built design and quality is everything for sub like this. Your already goin the extra mile with the sub, might as well continue all the way. And I think you might be lookin at least 500 $ if I am correct. But it beat what you can buy from JL for that price (lol).

WOW!! $500 thats a bit over my limit. I was planning on getting 2 15" Diamond Audio CM3's for in the $300 range. My limit for my system is $1000 and that would put me well over it. They are nice subs look great but I think there too much for me lol. Well thanks for the input though. And im new to the SQL area of car audio so what are some good three way speakers that I could get to replace the cars origional system, or tweeters or what ever I need?

Sure you can, but it's expensive. My car is that way, I have one of the highest excursion 15s available, for any price, but I keep it balanced pretty much all the time and it sounds great. The problem is "SQL" is expensive, very expensive, if you want to do it right you can expect to spend 2-3k easy. You also can't get an SPL box (ported with a high tune) and expect it to sound even acceptable, if you're going for SQL you either need a big high excursion sealed setup or a very low tuned ported setup.

if you want a bass system that can be heard (felt) a block a way - it COSTS. There are no $500 solutions to that application. If you want a good sound (mid/tweets), you are gonna run into the same problem. Anyone can buy the flea market stuff, but it will not be really loud OR sound really good. Unfortunately, at 16-18 or whatever, that may be all you can afford.

Ya thats why I think im going to wait before I get the sound quality portion of my system and just get the subs now because I can afford the subs. And do you think that CM3's will sound pretty good if I turn them down and have them with the rest of my system when I get it or is Diamond Audio not the best for sound quality? Actually can you rate the CM3's on a 1-10 scale in SPL and SQL. I know its completly oppinion but just tell me what you think in like a whole prespective. By the way I love this forum and the info I get (I was going to say and the people but I didnt want anyone getting the wrong idea lol) I started talking in this forum not knowing a thing about car audio and wanting to get some cheap sony xplode system not knowing what I was doing and that was like 2 years ago and yall have helped me to not waist money and time on crappy stuff. soo I just wanted to say thanks and you never know I might see some of yall some day. so thaks for taking your time with the noob

Just so you know, Diamond Audio makes some damn good equipment. And though your paticular choise appears to be an introductory series, if done correctly, you will be VERY impressed, Im more than sure. And I guess Id rate them subs 5.6 - 6. And that might not sound so good, but if you understand the magnitude of where the top is, its really not that bad. ALOT better than the X=poldes you had your eye on :uhoh: . The Diamond subs will lean toward sq more so than spl. But your series, may desighned for only a little of both. But on the good note, they share alot of the same technology thier uppers do, so they are great lower level subs.
Your high end . .. . I dont know many opinions here becuase Im new (oh, and btw, Hi, all (lol). But from what I know, you would be advised to stay away from coax, and go components. What size and location of the factory speakers slots ? And what did you have in mind, any direction of your own, or were you looking for suggestions on set up, or just brand ? Personally, would recomment a 6.5" comp set. Moderately decent set, no more than 200$.
And if Im steering this gentlemen wrong, someone please throw your suggestions/critisms out.

No I was just wandering what people thought of the CM3's because I cant demo them anywere, let alone buy them (unles I go 2 towns over). My setup that im wanting is 2 15" CM3's in a box that will replace the midgate of an Avalanche. And also get a new head unit but I have no idea which one im going to get. But if I dont get the Avalanche im going to get a Toyota Tundra and I will be taking the back seats out and going from there and in either truck I get I will have 2 15" and later on when my $ builds back up im going to replace all facotry speakers. And I have another question :] Has anyone out there put a sub box in the back of a vehicle were the seats had been removed? If soo I need help on how to design a box and make it look nice and be efficiant. And would it need to be just a plain square box? And what about angling subs, how would I get the most boom from my subs, should I have them in a forward-fireing box, have them facing up, or at a 45 degree angle?

the optimum angle, location and firing direction for max output from your sub can only be determined by experimentation. Generally, just pointing them straight out parallel to the floor works good.

O.K. How do you design a box? Ive been doodling on how I want the box to look (for the tundra) and is it possible to put some 6x9 in the same box as the subs but in another part that I add onto the box? and how can I make the box look good I dont want a plain black box in the back of my truck. So what can I do to make it unique lighting, paint, etc. what have you seen in a car that you thought was cool and looked good ?

I have to agree completely, kinda hard to say, it is an emperimental thing, every vehicle is a little different. Typically, Ive heard of people goin to the extent of finding the Res freq of thier cabin, which obviously can only be done if you had the vehicle, and since you dont know for sure which one its going in, would be kind of hard to say. But YOu cant go wrong with what paul said, parrallel.

The subs are okay, or even on the better side of OK. Truthfully, with 15's, you will get plenty volume out them, best stick with the cleaner side of things, and you are doing just that. Cause big woofers like that can be sloppy depending on brand.
And also get a new head unit but I have no idea which one im going to get.
For the HU, all we need is a budget.

It woudl seem I was crazy enough to do that to my car. 4-15's in the back of an 84 Monte Carlo. I had a custom built Bandpass box with the ports goin down each side. The speakers were facing each other but at a mere 35 - 45 degrees to the windsheild. Made for really nice eye candy. I had 6x9 boxes added as an extension and stuck in the little triangle window/bolted onto the big box. The carpet on that one was the typical blk and white. The box before that was just a big rectangle with only 2-15's. Thats the one with the embossed logo and white vinyl. Just some suggestions, no reccomendations. But you have the option of matching carpet, vinly, or fiberglass enclosure (with a shnazy paint job of your choice, but this can get very pricy. There is embossing, or the opposite even. You can also go a diff color with the embossing, looks very nice. Maybe upload a picture of the inside cab, it might be easier to suggest.

I am not a mouthpiece for low-hz. I have heard there subs and others like dd and re. The rd subs weren't as loud as the 9500's or xxx but sounded amazing while still running 2000 watts. Just a suggestion if you can't afford dd or re. Personally I am a DD fan but not everyone has the money.

Fiberglass, or abs but you would need to make a mold to make it out of ABS. Fiberglass is the best DIY solution.
I wouldnt even rate the XXX and the 9500 on the same series one is an SPL sub and the other is an SQL sub. MAybe the old XXX could rate with it but the new XXX would blow a 9500 away even for an SQL sub it gets very loud. Not sure if you understand the abilities of a driver with an X-max of almost 5".

and one that also weighs 78 lbs  the only real thing bad about the XXX is that it is loud to human ears but not on test equipment.

You will be very lucky. I had one guy freak out when he seen my RE comps, he started saying how he only knew of a few people who have ever heard of them. It was bad enough only one of the guys at the IASCA booth had ever heard of Ascendant Audio. And one of the other ones didnt believe me that they where SQ subs. What makes things even better was when i was at wally world the other day (long story). I was talking to these two guys and they seen my enclosure through the window, well one of the guys had a maxima with 2 15" L7's and he was claiming to have a 10k watt rockford amp. Which there was no way in hell considering my setup sounded louder by alot. His friend was just in awe, and the other guy was like ive never heard of them they must suck. I didnt feel like getting into it as i was already late for work.

Haha ya I bet your system lowered his ego about his system and shut him up for a bit on the way home. LoL. Ya I hope to get one of these ALMIGHTY subs someday but being 15 my budget wont alow it. So ill settle for less for now. But does it only take one of these sub's (Like anyone could aford more lol) to be louder (and sound beeter) than most cars with more, bigger lower class sub's?

I put 2 twelve inch woffer's with a 1200 watt sony amp. in my daughter's 02 Grand Prix, they were put in what I assume you call a fart box and placed back to back with the rear seat in the trunk and you can bet you can here her from 2 or more miles away and the back glass is about 1 dec. from cracking out,,that's a bit much for an old man like me,,but it should be enough to do the trick in your car,to bad you have to take the seats out.

Haha do you know were I could get one of those bumper stickers? If not ill prob just make one but im not going to put it on the outside of my car (even though its a BUMPER sticker) because I dont want my system getting jacked and its kinda cocky yet realy funny so ill just put it on the box or something. And yes I just want more than 12" im getting 15" and they wont fit in the tiny tundra that im getting so im taking the seats out.

Ive seen that somewhere before. I thought it was funny as crap. There are a bunch of people around here that have loud systems that sound like crap, mainly cause they dont upgrade there front speakers they just throw subs in the cars. and most of them just use audiobahns, or some crap they think sounds good. My favorite was the kid in high school that use 2-15" home speakers in his escort. We used to dog on him so bad and he got into talking about how his system is so this and that. And back at that time i didnt know much about stereo's i bought my first set of good subs, 2-infinity perfect 12"s. A profile amp mb quart 6x9"s in the rear and a set of power acoustik 4" speakers in the dash. It sounded pretty good il admit it wasnt the best. But it was the loudest one at the high school. The kid with the house speakers was an idiot.

Ya I plan to eventually upgrade everything. And should I add some 6x9's along with replacing the door speakers and what is a good brand to use when wanting good sound quality with the door speaker mids and tweeters or should I just get some three ways (and three ways are the mid tweeter and bass all thrown into one speaker right) (I felt dumb asking that but ive never realy known)
