Alright my dell inspiron laptop will not load. It gets to the windows xp loading screen and then i get a blue screen. saying

Stop:0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF8B3580C, 0xF8B35508, 0XF852D1FC)

NTFS.SYS address F852D1FC Base at F8520000 Datestamp 41107eea

Anyone have any idea what this means?

The NTFS file system is corrupt. That actual system file may be corrupt, bad data somewhere, or SCSI and/or IDE drivers are corrupted. Run a diskcheck if possible to see if it will repair the problem. Did you install any new software prior to this?

I find it hard to believe that an operating system file being corrupt is limiting you from booting to a system disc. Make sure in your BIOS that under the boot menu, CD is listed above the hard drive. Then also make sure you hit a key when it asks to boot to the CD drive.

After you get into the Win XP setup, go to the repair console. Run the command of "chkdsk" and let us know if you get anywhere with that or if it detects errors that are unfixable.

When i start the system with the XP disc in i can get to the menu to select install/repair but when i select either one i get that blue screen. Im not sure if its the same error codes but its the same blue screen.

any idea how to get into the check disc option? I remember getting into it before but the battery died so i couldnt do it. I've got the power cord now so if i can get back in there i can run the tests.

Alright so i just spent an hour chatting with "dell tech support" Using the error codes i listed they claim its a harddrive fault and i need to replace that.

My warranty expired in 2006 so i would have to pay. Im working on trying to get them to fix it for free though. Ill comment again when i have more information on the topic

How can i format the drive if i cant load anything? Is there a way to do it before it tried to load XP? Or is the harddrive just shot??

To format, you'd have to do it either through the command prompt or hook the laptop up to another machine. And I would absolutely, positively, make sure the problem is nothing else but the hard drive and a format is the only solution. I've learned this the hard way.:frown:

Why not buy a new hard disk, and put the existing disk in an external USB2 case, to be used as additional storage.

You can install Windows on the new disk, and it'll be easy to format the existing one - just plug it into another computer for format.

Well im trying to sell it so i want to avoid putting money into it if i can. If there is a way i can format the hard drive thats in there i would like to do that. Otherwise ill probably end up listing it on ebay with the faults.

OK, just get an external 2.5" USB2.0 case. They're about $10, and will allow you to plug the drive into another computer and format it.

How hard is it to remove the drive from the laptop? and whats the risk that i could mess something up? Im somewhat good with taking stuff apart and putting it back together the right way.

Very little risk. Just take a look at it, I'm willing to bet it's 3 screws or less and you just pull it out.

http://www.buy.com/prod/cp-tech-usb-2-0-2-5-platinum-series-external-hard-drive-enclosure/q/loc/101/10392025.html

also would any of these hard drives work if i do choose to replace it?

That's exactly the sort of enclosure you're after.

Just confirm whether your notebook drive connects using the IDE or SATA interface.

Here's an example of each:

IDE:

SATA:

thanks alot oz, mine looks like the first one so as long as i go IDE i should be fine? Im thinkin if i can get a decent size hard drive for a good price i might just keep it for school.

So something like this would be just fine then?

Yep, should be fine, but why not just buy the external enclosure as suggested to format the existing drive?
