Rear brake cost and ease of replacement?

The rear brakes on my 03 are shot. I have a friend who is willing to help me replace them, but I am wondering what the cost of parts is like.

I have never done drum brakes and I am not sure how that works. I know the shoes need to be replaced. Can the drums be resurfaced? If so, how much would that cost? If I have to buy shoes and drums what do you think the cost might be? $200 or less?

Any help would be appreciated.

How many miles on your 2003? Those rears should last a long time. It they need to be replaced, I'd call my local Napa, Carquest, Autozone, Advance Auto for a price on drums, shoes and hardware kit. I go with best price. You may also need to rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders. Look up a parts diagram on the Autozone website. These rear drums are pretty small and simple. Be sure to remove the star washers from the lug studs first (that hold the drums in place from the factory), then tap the drums off.

your rear brakes should be lasting a lot longer then 54000 k, make sure that when u replace them to get them serviced and adj from time to time. I would go with new drums they are fairly cheap now a days
