Excessive half axle play on a 1989 Honda Accord LXi

Hello,

My girlfriend just bought a 1989 Honda Accord LXi with 93,000 miles on the odometer. :) Where the drivers side half axle enters the transaxle there seems to be alot of excessive play compared to the passengers side half axle.:frown: I can grab the axle and move it quite a bit. I have to replace the drivers side axle seal and didnt know if the seal was worn down because of too much axle play.

Is this excessive (drivers side) axle play normal? should I just replace the leaking axle seal and leave the rest alone?:disappoin There doesn't seem to be any bearing noise from a worn out bearing. I'm not sure what to do. Any help is appriceated. Thank You.

I found hard to believe a 1993 car with only 93K, but if is true, I will replace the whole half shaft to maintain and preserve the integrity of this low-mileage car.

The part is only less than $100.00. I bought one half shaft for my 1997 accord and I only paid $60.00 plus $60.00 deposit core. My accord reads 176K miles on the clock. It did not show any play, but I replaced the rotors and left the half shaft hanging thus damaging the inner shaft. It was reccomended to me to replace the whole thing

The half shaft seems fine. there is not any excessive play in it. :)

I can grab onto the halfshaft near the transaxle and move it round and round. :uhoh: I am not sure what the name for this excessive play is. Most cars I've seen the longer shaft will move around a lot more in the tranny case than the other side. I always assumed the longer shaft puts more load on the output bearing, so it wears sooner (more torque effects). If the shaft is bent or has a loose joint it would multiply the wallowing effect and wear it even faster...

Without seeing exactly how much movement it has, hard to say if it needs a bearing, but just the fact that it has more play than the other side by itself does not alarm me...that's typical.

How bad does it leak from the seal? Just oily around the area or does it actually drip when the case is full?
