What would be the best weight and type of oil for my 1988 22R-E 4runner. 261 000 km????

I would use 5W30 all year around unless you live really north. Then 0W30 or 0W20 synthetic.

(considering you live in Canada)

I'd suggest something a little heavier for the summer, like 10W30 or even 20W40 if it gets hot.
Synthetic oil is not normally suggested for high mileage (worn) engines.

On the topic of oil choices / alternatives, ive been going to the dealer for the oil changes and they use their "synthetic blend" that they claimed to have switched over to a few years back.

Any of you Toyota pro's have an opinion on this? Is full synthetic better? Worse? Opinions?

Synthetic oil is certainly superior to dino oil. However, whether it is necessary to run synthetic for your engine to last longer than with dino oil is another story. IMO, you should use synthetic only when it is clearly superior to dino oil. When is that?

When you have an engine that really gets oil hot or contaminates oil more than normal (for example, If you have a turbo, or in the Toyota engines that are known to have sludging problems).
When you drive short distances and don't heat up your oil enough, or heat it long enough to vaporize contaminants.
When you don't change your oil frequently because of various reasons.
There may be other times, but I don't remember them all.

Synthetic oil is clearly superior to dino oil in oxidation resistance.

Synthetic oil is clearly inferior to dino oil in cost.
