I needed to take a break on the Ferrari F1-2000 so I thought I would get working on this beautiful car.

This is just the mock up to see how the parts fit and get the pieces in the right spot.

First off let me just say that the white metal is the best Studio 27 white metal to date. The pieces are not bent and are actually a much harder mold. They are also thinner than most of the older Studio kits I have see/built.

Very smooth resin with little marks or cleanup needed. to the body.

All white metal pieces were sanded with Tamiya sand paper. There are a few pieces that need some putty to clean up some holes in them.

I know there are a lot of people that dont like Studio kits because they are not 100% accurate but I would rather have them as a starting point and have the option to put in a little extra effort than not have anything at all.

So enough with that...on to the build.

I will have another update later today and will keep the Ferrari going at the same time as this kit.

Overall I am very pleased with this kit and it looks like it with a little extra work it will build a very nice replica of the early 2007 Mclaren.

Thanks for looking!

Another update.
I started using CF decals on the suspension. The hard part is Studio molds everything together in once piece. Templates were made using tape and used on various Scale Motorsport carbon decals as well as Slixx carbon.

Thanks to billypee for help getting better pictures as well.
Thanks again for the tip!

Enjoy the pics.

I am going to replace the kit brakes with a set of Top Studio F1-2000 brakes set. They fit perfect and look great on the car.

Still working on the panel lines at this point, lots of work to do on them!

Saint - Yes thanks for the comments on this board as well. It's tough trying to remember to update all of these places on the net.

Here is the update that includes cleaning the panel lines and adding some of the extra pieces to get ready for the chrome finish.

Here you can see were I had to use CA glue to clean up a mess I made when my knife slipped cleaning the panel lines.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1369/1253934740_8979350e10.jpg?v=0

I used the back of an Xacto blade (brand new) to clean the panel lines. I started with a photo etched blade but it was slipping and bending so I needed something more stable. I would drag the very tip back and forth both directions on a line to clean up the mess that is the Studio mold.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1050/1253935244_b1e238cd61.jpg?v=0

Here you can see one of the real trouble areas on the car. These panel lines around the head support are not very deep and need to be more detailed. After a single coat of primer the lines were already filled and hard to see. I plan to use thinned black or brown paint to bring out the panel lines and I need for them to be able to flow for this to work.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1007/1253935928_1353761e28.jpg?v=0

The wing support was added to the front of the nose using CA glue. Extra glue was added to both the right and left side to cause a puddle after the two pieces joined. A toothpick was used to spread the puddle evenly and the result after sanding and primer is a very clean looking contact point. With chrome paint going on the car I think every mistake will be easy to see so extra care is being taken now to get things looking right.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1381/1253936452_2a6da82e31.jpg?v=0

The back of the car requires some real work.
Pieces need extra bending, putty, styrene and more filler to get them the right size and shape to make it look correct. I didnt take pictures of all the work that was done because it would have slowed me down but I can tell you that parts M42 - M43 need some work as does M46. Again, I'm not complaining because at least I can build this car in 1/20th scale! I'll put in the extra work.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1343/1253936948_ea4561023f.jpg?v=0

You can see I'm not done yet. There are still some gaps and areas that need fixed.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1405/1253076005_9418c4d3f5.jpg?v=0

These '07 F1 cars really are good looking machines even before you get the final livery on them!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1332/1253077505_3ed0ffbfc6.jpg?v=0

And a side view with more parts on the car.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1251/1253078017_3aee877591.jpg?v=0

And the front view.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1220/1253940154_56db01ad1a.jpg?v=0

I really hope to finish this kit in the next 3 weeks so keep the ideas and comments coming. They provide the motivation needed to keep pushing through the CF decals after hour and hours of the same thing over and over!!

Thanks again for looking.

Your doing a great job these F1 S27 kits look a little tricky to build maybe one day I get enough nerve to try one.

Fixing the panel lines tip.

1. Use the tape that is used to make labels and cut a small piece to work with.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1312/1263060870_7f164f3a65.jpg?v=0

2.Remove part of the backing to expose the tacky portion of the tape. Only remove part so you have an easy way to remove when you are done.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1247/1263061664_f0a0dff2b0.jpg?v=0

3.Place tacky side down on the kit along the panel line you want to scribe and drag back of xacto along the tape to ensure you dont make any mistakes.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1251/1263062282_326d01286c.jpg?v=0

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1302/1263062886_01d10ee70d.jpg?v=0

One piece can be used again and again and it is just thick enough to help guide the blade and keep you on track.

Back to the update...

This is my first time really using putty to do anything large on a kit.
I chose to use Tamiya Epoxy Putty to fix M42 and M43 and make the connection to smooth and seamless.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1332/1263054464_1d4f5b73a3.jpg?v=0

Equal parts were used and as I found out it doesn't take much

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1285/1263055958_918309c776.jpg?v=0

Have water ready because things get sticky real quick!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1299/1262199925_ad97522cb7.jpg?v=0

These were mixed to ensure everything was mixed together and left to set while I tried to clean up some of the mess I had made.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1097/1263058206_917437fe16.jpg?v=0

I covered the entire piece because I didnt want to work with a transition in the middle of the wing. I will sand and shape tomorrow.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1249/1263058792_70d8a14b41.jpg?v=0

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1296/1262202499_20410895cc.jpg?v=0

And now the kit will sit and dry till tomorrow.

Great update! I also found out the hard way that you only need a LITTLE epoxy putty to get the job done. I use Milliput, but it appears that the Tamiya stuff is doing a great job for you.

Those two parts you've attached with the putty, have you actually covered the whole part with the orange stuff? If you find that makes it come out too thick, perhaps sand it off and just use a little clear epoxy glue for the join. If you have a product called Araldite that would be perfect, but you may not have it in your country (if you're not in Australia). Or perhaps I'm missing the point of why you're using the putty... anyway, looking forward to seeing how it comes out!

builder77

Left the kit in the car today to kind of cook the putty.

Sanded using Tamiya sandpaper and smoothed it down and made the wings the correct shape.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1265/1270000509_9bbc8d6570.jpg?v=0

Primed the putty parts, sanded and primed again.

These parts are now ready for the chrome.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1231/1270001077_a3c0edc5e7.jpg?v=0

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1107/1270001539_6db3c1ca9e.jpg?v=0

I have scribed all the panel lines...again...and washed the kit.

It will be left to sit for 2 days while I get the other parts ready and should be shooting the chrome Friday night/Saturday morning.

Does anyone have any good pictures of the wheels/brakes on this car?

Thanks for looking.

It is dry to the touch in about 12-15 minutes.
I'm going to let everything set overnight before giving everything one last wet coat.

If you use motochrome I suggest using a gloss black base.
It makes for a smoother finish and has more shine.

More pictures tomorrow after they get the final coat of chrome plus the clear coat.

Enjoy

Excellent work so far on this build.I always think it is a shame that on a kit in this price range you have to rescribe the panel lines. They really should be up to a high standard to begin with in my opinion. But I suppose this is part and parcel of resin kits, not all of them, but some of them.Anyway, you made a really nice job of the rescribing work and the chrome looks fantastic.Looking forward to following your progress on this one.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
I had some problems last night after shooting the motochrome.
As it dried the shine went away and soon it had the look like it etched the auto primer I had used.

I contacted Rene at Weber Plastic Models (http://www.weberplasticmodels.com/) and asked what the detailed instructions were that came with the paint. He informed me that it needs to be on a shiny surface with black paint to help it reflect. I had sprayed it on the grey primer and it looked bad!

I rubbed all the parts off to clean off as much of the paint as possible before washing and wetsanding every piece.

Emailed Rene and was going to purchase more paint when he offered to send me some! Thanks Rene and I highly recommend Weber Plastic Models because they are very fast and great customer service!!

All parts were then painted with Tamiya white primer and left to dry in the food dehydrator.

Tamiya black paint was shot from the can in several light coats building up a shiny finish.

This was wetsanded and put back in the dehydrator to dry all the water.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1123/1295400908_7efafdb340.jpg?v=0

A final wet layer was shot creating a very clean shiny surface.
Back into the dehydrator for 30-45 minutes and left to set overnight.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1188/1294535487_97fade4568.jpg?v=0

And finally the motochrome is airbrushed at around 18-20 PSI, no thinner added, shaken, warmed and put right into the airbrush. A random pattern was used for the first several thin layers before a final pass over the body was done.

The the final result is flawless!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1268/1294536267_e5fda21f44.jpg?v=0

This is before the clear coat that is made specifically for the Motochrome product.

NOTE** Do not touch the chrome paint as it does come off if it is handled before the clear coat!!

Thanks again Rene!!

The chrome looks very bright now when shot over the gloss black. When you spray the coats of chrome do you end up totally covering the gloss black basecoat or are the chrome coats so light and transparent that the black still shows and this is what creates the spectacular chrome effect, the reflection from the black. This has always been what puzzles me with these chrome paints,Alclad included.Do I cover the black with the chrome or just lightly dust the chrome on thinly to leave the black exposed? What do you think?

Cabarbe - Sorry but your not going to like the end product!! ;)

Steve - I completely covered the black with the chrome paint. I have no clue how this works but I can tell you that the black IS required.

Ace - Motochrome not alclad B&D Fire Storm.

Quick update.

I tried the clear that came with the motochrome, shaken, warmed and left to sit. After trying on the very back and bottom of the car it was almost like there was too much thinner in it. It took the chrome paint right off!

I ended up cleaning the airbrush and using Finisher clear instead.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1198/1304797501_9e7964b107.jpg?v=0

The panel lines look good thanks to the black base, the only problem is I need to touch up some areas because the clear pulled the paint back around some of the panel lines.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the results and the car is ready for the decals.

Thanks for looking.

If you use the motochrome here is what I found works.
1. Clean and prime part
2. Black, Very Shinny layer
3. Clear this black layer
3. Shoot on motochrome
4. Clear - This is going to look like crap when you are done because it washes out the chrome
5. Shoot another layer of Chrome
6. Clear again and this will come out perfect.

Shoot the motochrome at a very very low pressure and build up layers.

Top Studio Brake set looks great on the car and I pained them darker than most of the the other kits I have built. My reference pics show Mclaren with very dark rotors. Still not sure if I will add the turned bolts I bought for the brakes on this kit.

Tires are done. White line painted followed by the tires getting ripped up by a metal brush on the dremel. Very good effect and nice build up of rubber on the tires.

Wheels are painted with Tamiya Metallic Black, Tamiya Clear and decals on. I'll take pictures of the tires and wheels tomorrow.

The only sticking point right now is the paint for the wings.
I cannot match the orange decals for the wings!
I have painted and stripped several times and just cannot get it to look right.
Suggestions?

I just think it looks beautiful, the colours look spot on and you have made an incredibly neat job of such a difficult colour scheme.

Forgive my ignorance but when you say RC paint, do you mean the Polycarbonate stuff from Tamiya?

Looking really great at the end. I wait for final pictures with great anticipation.

Very nice work. It's been a while since I looked in on your thread but it has certainly progressed nicely. The colours and the chrome finish look fabulous.

Looking at the pictures, the paint looks like the Silver Leaf (TS-30). Could you go closer with the camera with a different light incidence? Thanks

Here are some pictures with the suspension on.
I have tried to get the effect of the chrome but it really is hard to capture with the camera.
All i can say after seeing the actual car is it looks spot on.
The actual car is not a mirror and this is a very good way to replicate the paint.
