i have an 89 firebird a year ago i found out about vatts. I bypassed it with resistors from radio shack it's been working fine but now i think that its happening again or something cus the starter just clicks one time and i hear a whinning noise from the driver side kick panel, also the lights look to be loosing power or something cus they dim alot (brake light ,security). i measured the resistance on the insert i made and it was off by 107 so i soldered on an extra 100 ohm onto it but it still doesn't start. the battery is fully charged and the starter is good. actually the starter needed shims and when i took it off i could see where the flywheel had cut into the starter do u think the teeth on the flywheel got f-ck up. if so i thought the flywheel metal was harder than the starter hood. need help thanks guys

tell u one thing about the resistors...the camaro i have now was done that way, and it screwed up..the problem with the resistors is sometimes after awhile it starts reading outta the range it was set 2..let me try an explain it the way my boy told me...u have a certain amount they have to equal in order for the car to start, u can be off by a little bit.... if u are over or under by just a bit much it wont work...sometimes one of the resistors get jacked and sometimes it will read correct and other times it wont..thats why u can try an start the car and it wont then come back 10 minutes later and try and she fires right up...what i ended up having him do was the same exact thing i did with my old RS..instead of using the resistors use the black chip from your key...its the perfect resistor for the car, all u have to do is tap it out of the key, and get u 2 small peices of wire and sauder it in between and have the vatts bypassed with that...never had a problem with the RS since, and now i havent ever had a problem with the F1..the key chip is the exact ammount u try to reproduce with the resistors..the only problem is the resistors arent absolute all the time..i hope that helps u out. now as for your dimming problems....check the alt. battery, and even you maf...when mines started doing that of all the things i named...it was the maf sinsor...the car started wigging out and cutting off and the lights werent on too bright...it was a hott mess lol. :smokin:

If the other sugestion doesn't work, I had a problem with my RS that sounded the same as yours. I ended up having to remove the steering wheel and get into the column. Inside there is a very small yellow wire (starter kill switch) it has a tendancy to wiggle lose. If this is the case with your car, get a magnafying glass and a low wattage soldering iron and resolder the wire.
Good Luck!!

From your description of what is going on here I dont think you are having a VATS problem.
If the starter is clicking (even one time) and you are hearing a whining noise from the kick panel area, then i dont think VATS is what's shutting you down.
I would seriously think about replacing that starter with a new one and have your battery load tested. The cells in the battery may degraded or shorted out and the battery is not giving full cranking amps to start the car (even though it appears to be fully charged)

i had both the starter and battery checked and both were good. the whinning noise seems to be comming from a relay(starter relay i think) in the bottom left driver side panel- i measured the ohm's from behind the pellet WHILE IT WAS PLUGGED IN and it was reading -1555 or something like that, plus i can see the wires and they appear to be going on top of the steering column but i wont know for sure till 2morow when i can lower the column. thanks for your help guys, but if anyone can think of something else please let me know....also the problem with the lights have been fixed since that time the starter was checked. So thats why i know it a vats problem maybe the module i hope
