05 Supercharged SS - fuel?

I have a 2005 Monte Carlo Supercharged SS - just picked it up a few days ago. The owners manual says that I should only use fuel that is 92 octane or better. It says that using lower octane fuel will cause engine damage. I've seen things in owners manuals over the years that weren't necessarily true. Is this one of them? Will using lower octane fuel damage the engine? I'm assuming they mean that engine knock could develope under hard accelleration, but they don't say in the manual. The car came with a full tank from the dealer, and dealers don't typically send a car out with a tank of premium. I didn't notice any knocking while - shall we say - "excercising" the supercharger (which really works well, by the way). Any advice is appreciated.

The 92 octane should be looked at as a recomendation only. A lot of gas stations only sell say a 90 or 91 octane which is an average anyway. The idea is that the supercharged engine has a higher compression and can burn the higher octane fuel. It will be fine to run 90 to 92 in the engine. If it were me I would never run below 89 octane with that particular engine. But the occasional tank of 87 will not hurt the engine either. The only way it will make the car go faster is by lessening the weight of your wallet. :2cents:
