Im a Jeep guy so Im new to Rangers but Ive been shopping for a pickup. I came across an 03 FX4 Ranger with a manual tranny. Its loaded except for power seats. Can you guys/gals give me a rundown of the drivetrain and what to look for as far as problem areas. Does anything standout as being good or bad about the 03 Rangers?
From what Ive picked up so far it has the 4.0 V6, an 8.8 rearend with Torsen and 4.10 gears, a D35 front diff. I dont know what manual transmissions or what transfer cases came in them. Ive heard the tranfercase shift electronics can be problematic but I admittedly know little about that system. Ive also heard the front hubs can become a problem.
Any help to educate me on the 03 Ranger before I flop money down would be appreciated. TIA

Ok, I did some digging. The M5OD manual tranny seems to have issues with seals leaking. How bad is this? Is it something to be overly concerned with? The BW1356 transfercase has had issues with the shift motor, again, is it something to worry about?

Ok, it seems Ive stumped everyone, let me try a different question. Whats the difference between the 2003 FX4 and the 2003 FX4/level II? Such as gearing, limited slip, skid plates, and so forth?

I have a 1993 ford ranger 4.0. my brother has a 2001 ford ranger EDGE with a 4.0 engine. I used to have a 97 ranger 3.0 4x4.
I did have some problems with the electronic shift because I did not use it right. I broke the hubs on the wheels. But it was very easy to replace the hubs. I liked the ability to switch into 4x4 without getting out of the car. It was awesome. Gas mileage was ok. It wasnt great. These 4.0L rangers really eat up alot of gas. I liked the 3.0 more. I dont see a whole lot of difference in power either.
Just remember, When Disengaging a 4x4 electronic ranger. Back up after you turn it from low/high back into 4x2. It will unlock. If you do not do this, you will break your locking hubs. You will also mess up your alignment. Good luck
