Does anyone know if any F1s were in Monterey at any of the
events this year? I know last year SVAG sold the yellow one at auction
and now it is white. I have not heard of a single one being there in
2007 but I could be very wrong. If there was one and anyone
has pics do post them here if you can.
thanks in advance

I have just returned from Monterey and as far as i am aware, there were no F1s in the area. I say as far as im aware as it is such a large occassion over so many different areas and events that no body gets to see everything. Though i am 95% certain there was no F1 activity this year. Sorry!

It appears Don Wallace's CLK-GTR was up at auction although there is conflicting info on RM's website. Don's car is the #1 chassis and is a silver SuperSport version (I have a photo of the chassis plaque). However, the description of the car for sale is also #1 and a silver SuperSport, but it says the other SuperSport is #17 and resides in South Florida (technically Don Wallace lives in Tampa, which is pretty much central FL). Seems odd since he really only collects the first and last cars. He had the 1st MC12, 1st Veyron in US, 1st CLK-GTR, last Enzo (Pope), and one of the last road F1s.

Gerd Petrik has (or had?) a CLK GTR in his collection - maybe that is the other Florida car being referenced. I am only speculating as I don't have much knowledge on any specific CLK GTR
He's in the Sarasota/Venice area which isn't really South Florida either...?

It was Mr Wallace's car that was up for auction, it does have a supersport engine and is car number one. It did not sell however. I spoke to the Mercedes benz man, responsible for all the CLK GTRs and he confirmed that the 'real' Supersport is in Florida. Also that there are three in the U.S. Those being Mr Wallaces, Gerds (i presume) and the Supersport. Interestingly he told me that if a Californian wanted one that it could be done legally, to meet thier emmissions standards and with no loss of Horse power!?
by the way what is the best place for monterey pics, as i know this is the F1 thread area?

Right, Gerd is in Osprey, which is a little south of Sarasota/Bradenton on the west coast of Florida. The weird thing is, Don's CLK-GTR has the mirrors mounted on the a-pillars whereas every other CLK-GTR has them mounted on the front fenders (including Gerd's). Everything about this car screams Don Wallace's, but I've never heard of Gerd's being a SS as well. I saw his car in like 2001 and it was a normal CLK-GTR. The red SuperSport was still red and for sale by Auto Salon at that time so it's weird...
Here's a little detective work, Peloton style. :D
Red SS that was for sale at Auto-Salon-Singen. Shows #17 of 25. Notice mirror location, roof antenna, lack of turn signal next to door:

Silver SS that was for sale at Auto-Salon-Singen. Notice same mirror location, badging, roof antenna, and no turn signal next to door:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4686/72016524ym3.th.jpg (http://img210.imageshack.us/my.php?image=72016524ym3.jpg) http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/6503/64901374zz4.th.jpg (http://img184.imageshack.us/my.php?image=64901374zz4.jpg)
Silver SS at Monterey that was being auction off. Notice mirror location on the A-pillar, lack of badging, no roof antenna, and it has a turn signal next to the door:

And just to compare to Gerd's. Notice side mirrors and lack of SS badges compared to the silver at Auto-Salon. No roof antenna and it has the turn signal:
At Mt. Dora: http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9045/43248666ou4.th.jpg (http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=43248666ou4.jpg)

So it appears Don is selling his CLK-GTR. I know he sold his MC12 a while back. Does this mean his F1 will be going up for sale soon? :)

Mr Wallaces car has a supersport grade engine that was 'retrofitted' at the factory. The red car with tan laether, shown above was originally supplied with a supersport engine and as such is regarded as the true Supersport, it was resprayed silver and had dark leather fitted, and is the same car resold later at Auto salon singen also shown above, as the Mercedes man told me. So basically there are two Supersport engined cars, one real, the other Mr Wallaces.

Interesting. I'm assuming you're only talking about the coupes and not any of the roadsters (like the one Peloton saw in Cali). Don, Gerd, and someone else each have a CLK-GTR in Florida?! :) Sounds good to me! :D

Holy crap man, great job! Be honest, who killed JFK?
So its 25 coupes, 5 roadsters, and how many of the SS?
Of the 25 coupes, two are SS models. Chassis #01/25 (SS spec engine) and #17/25 (true SS).

Thanks. So only one real SS and one "regular" coupe with SS engine? None of the roadsters were SS, correct? For some reason I believed the SS had its own "production run" if you know what I mean...

According to my information there are 4 SS's:
#17/25 is the official/original SS by HWA, was red and is now silver, ex-UAE and is now located in Florida (#17)
#03/25 has the 7,3 litre SS engine, was the 1st to be fitted with this engine, is silver and is located in Dubai, owned by Mohammed Bin Sulayem.
#01/25 homologation car, SS-spec (according to RM auctions it was fitted with the 7,3 AMG at the start of his life; it never had the 6,9????), is silver, loacted in Florida, owned by Don Wallace.
#??/25 RHD CLK GTR with the SS-spec engine, silver, ex-Brunei (Royal Family) and currently in Singapore

To my knowledge there are no known Roadster converions known today, though there is a big chance that the ex-Brunei Roadster was fitted with the SS engine by HWA, but I have yet to find proof of that.

Do you have pictures of this? I only have two photos of his car, but do you have one of the chassis plaque? Btw, where did you find out it has the SS engine? I could only find an article by Supercars.net saying that, but I don't know the accuracy of it.

edit: not that that chassis number is easy too read lol :p;)

Interesting, i was aware of Bin Sulayems car but was unsure whether to believe the internet chit chat about it being a Supersport engined car. As for the ex-Brunei car being one i had never heard that, but it seems very possible. Would be nice to have clarification somehow. I still think its a shame that the real supersport was repainted from its original red, thats what made it stand out from the rest.:screwy:

I fully agree with you, the SS looked so sweet in red/tan.
As for the Brunei car: we won't get to see visual clarification, but there are a number of people who have seen it and have confirmed that it is SS-spec...

I forgot about this, but I do have a picture of the engine, allthough you can't really read anything more than AMG of it. I don't know if there is a way to spot the difference between the SS-spec engine and the normal engine:

Hmm...I'm fairly certain #01 was built only a few months before they started to race. At least according to that video on youtube that shows how the CLK-GTR all began. It does raise a good question since 25 (I think) had to be built to race. Could MB just say we'll build them later in the season even though they already raced with just a few road versions completed?

Could be, I remember there was a lot of controversy with the whole homologation(?) process during the late 90's. First they bent the rules to let Porsche in (96' GT1, i believe) since they knew it would draw a bigger crowd, and then the CLK. McLaren and Ferrari complained, since those weren't really racers based on road cars, but were purely built for racing and then turned into road cars to meet the requirements.

For the first video, the MP4/12 F1 car is the 1997 F1 car if you want an idea of when this stuff is happening.
Edit: Hmm...RM Auction has Don Wallace's CLK-GTR chassis number as WDB2973971Y000012, but the video shows WDB297397WA000001, which makes more sense for #01/25.

Yeah.

There was one road going CLK GTR needed to start competing and the other 24 were built later. At the time of the CLK LM they didn't even bother to make those other 24 cars anymore, only roadcar one was made..
