Hi--
I'm new to the forum. I just a bought an '05 Taurus wagon (49K) with an FFV engine. I changed the oil myself today for the first time. The manual lists the oil capacity, with filter, at 4.5 qts. for the Vulcan engine, yet my car needed at least 5.5 qts. to reach the correct dipstick level. Six qts. are required for the Duratec engine, but since this is an FFV fleet vehicle, I'm assuming I've got the smaller engine. I'm assuming I should trust the dipstick rather than the manual, right? Any ideas as to what's going on? Thanks.

Just a thought, if you changed the filter also, did you start the engine once you put the fourth quart of oil in so the filter could fill up with oil before you checked the dipstick?

Only Duratec motor's 3.0 24 valve take 6qts of oil. Look at motor it will say on top of motor Durratec 24 Valve. If not it's a 3.0 takes only 5 qts.
Hope this help you . Joe:)

Thanks, all. A mechanic from the shop that formerly serviced the car agrees: 5 quarts it is.

Not that its such a big deal but the owners manuel for my 2002 24 valve Duratic states it takes 5.5 qts, not six.

Overfilling the crankcase with oil is not doing you any favors. You'd be better served to fill to the correct level and use an oil filter with the anti-siphon/drainback valve.
You could actually do damage by overfilling the crankcase with oil. I'm not sure if 1/2 quart overful would put you at risk, but it doesn't benefit you either.
