I just purchased a 03 silverado 1500 4.8L ext. and I want to put a cat back system on it. I had a grand cherokee with a flowmaster on it and I loved it but they tell me the flowmasters on a silverado is bad. They say it resonates in the cabin. Is this true also what do you all like as far as looks, duals out the back,1 on each side or 2 out 1 side? Suggestions on a system please.

I have an 01 Silverado 4.8 and I have a magnaflow system. It's a single-in dual-out and it exits on both sides. I like it. It sounds good in and out of the cab. With flowmaster you wont gain as much power as with a magnaflow, corsa or borla because flowmaster is chambered while the others are straight through. Personaly i like the tips out on each side or straight out the back but Corsa makes a nice catback that has the two tips out on one side. Its nice but pricey.

Sorry about that, after I posted I read about there being a section on silverados only.

OK then...now that you have been spanked...welcome to the forum! Lots of guys and even some gals with tons of experience with these trucks. I have saved thousands of dollars by posting questions and fixing my truck myself rather then going to the dealer.
Good luck with your Silverado!

I've got a flowmaster 40 series df 3" in 3" out on my 4.8L and I'll probably never change it. I haven't heard anything that would sound better on it. I have always thought about going with a different muffler or brand, but fear of disappointment always makes me stick with this one.

I have audio files of it if you wanna hear it first.

I think they make a 50 series which is quieter is this correct? Listening to yours will do me know good my truck is not modified with headers and such like yours. I was told by a custom exhaust shop that no longers sells flowmaster that at a certain rpm the flowmaster resonates in the cab. I don't know if I should believe him or not. I loved the flowmaster on my jeep but I'm not sure about the truck???

I did away with the muffler all together. I like hearing the true sound of a V8.
Right now I have a straight pipe from the cat out to the passenger side. It sounds awesome. It has the growling sound at low and gets louder when you rev it.

I would go with the Flow'ies and NOT MAGNAFLOW!!! Magnaflow Single in dual out resonates BAD in the Cabin.
Had to put a High Flow resonator on it to help.

Do tail pipes soften the noise or will it sound no louder if I dump it just over the axel? Is it legal to do this?

Yes.. I have my pipe before the rear wheel and it is louder than when I had it out the back.

I had Borla on my 5.3 and loved it. It's what I'll always recommend for any Chevy truck. I received so many compliments with it.

Corsa is one of the better systems for these trucks...but they cost like $1000...I replaced the stock muffler on my truck with a Borla Turbo muffler and it sounds great and I get better gas mileage too!

Are the corsa mufflers loud and do they resonate in the cab?

50 series is definitely quiter. I actually had a 50 series suv performance on my 4.8 before i went with the 40 series. I didn't like the 50 series...too quiet for me.

Here's a couple sound clips/videos of my set up, I realize that it won't sound exactly the same being that mine is a 6.0 but it will give you an idea. Basically I started with a true dual exhaust, cats back w/ no muffler. That lasted for about 2days, the noise was not good really didn't care for the sound one bit. I picked up a 50series big block 2inlet/2oulet Flowmaster and slapped that on and I just love the sound. Also I gained 2-3mpg and a little more throttle response. Now I know some of you guys love loud exhaust but I just wanted a little rumble to remind people that this is a truck and this definitly does that.

Video 1
This is the video of starting it up..idling for a bit..and a couple good revs (Yea I know the exhaust is a little dirty, been raining here for days

Video 2
This is the cab noise with just about full throttle and then the cab noise cruising at 70mph..notice how the exhaust basically disappears once the cruise locks in.

Hope this helps a little bit

I had a Gibson dual rear exit system on my 02 with a 4.8 and it sounded great imo. When you had it in 3 on the gear selector and let off at about 45mph it would give out a great rumble sound. The noise in the cab was great, low rumble at idle and great tone at cruising speed.

I use a Gibson 3" straight through muffler with an aftermarket 3" aluminized stock configuration pipe and 4" into 5" diesel single tip. With 383 cubic inches and Edelbrock headers (and cat) it sets off all the car alarms, but isn't annoying in the cab.
