It's a VAG thing :D
It's a V8 engine with two cylinder banks a head, like two VR4 ebgines sharing a crank.
The W12 engine is two VR6 engines sharing a crank.

Like I said, my dad drives one.
They are not quick, but they are fast. The sedan weigh 3,953 lbs. and the wagon 4,067 lbs.

I have a W8 Variant. I just joined this forum (found it while searching for results form the WRC Turkey).
I had a 2000 Passat V6 GLX sedan previously, and loved that car. When looking for something new, I wanted a wagon, I wanted all-wheel drive, and I wanted more power, but didn't want to lose the comfort and features I had grown accustomed to with the Passat. The W8 worked out perfectly.
The car is pretty fast...not sports car territory, but solid for a sedan. I am able to out accelerate most V6s I've encountered...if it helps, it will outaccelerate a BMW 330 automatic by about 1 car length to 60MPH, but will lose by 1 1/2 car lengths to an M3. So it is somewhere in between. Unofficial stop watch timing seems to verify 0-60 in the low to mid 6 second range...I haven't had a chance to actually clock my car though.
It is heavy, so it needs the 275HP to move properly. The greatest thing about it is how solid and stable it feels at high speeds and on highway. It really is like a tank, and is perfectly comfortable at triple-digit speeds (at 100MPH, the engine is turning UNDER 3,000RPM in 5th gear, with the redline at 6500). Without a chip, the car feels capable of 150MPH range.
The handling is very nice. I have upgraded to 17" Momo rims on the stock suspension, which tightened up the handling (already commendably stiff). The 4motion AWD system is amazing allowing foul weather handling which is extraordinary, and the car is also equipped with ESP traction control and stabilization system...very effective at controlling unwanted maneuvers. The car will drift easily with ESP turned off...but with the weight of the car, it really eats up the tires to do so unless it is raining or the roads are slick.
If you have any other questions about the W8, let me know. I'll check out these boards more often.

Thank you!
I enjoyed my V6 sedan for 3 years...my long winter snow trips and the desire to bring my mountain bike with me wherever I go are why I opted for a wagon this time. (Before the Passat sedan, I had 3 SUVs in a row, and got spoiled by all that cargo room! Now with the wagon, I get the best of both worlds...SUV room inside, and car handling and acceleration outside!)

Unfortunately, not too much information on either question. The W8s have only been for sale for 2 model years now, so the oldest used one you'll find I think is a 2002 model. I don't think you could get one for much under about $29,000.
As for reliability, also hard to say since the engine has only been on the market for a short period of time. My 2000 Passat with the V6 engine was excellent, and had no unscheduled maintenance or problems in ~40,000 miles. Most Consumer magazines recommend the Passat as a best buy, and the build quality and material quality is very high.
The 2002 W8 engine had a recall for faulty coil packs which may affect some vehicles...VW had a much larger recall for coil packs on all of their 1.8T engines on all model of cars from 2001 and 2002. Some W8s were also affected since the coil packs were from the same supplier. VW has a new supplier which should have resolved the problem. Pre-2001 cars and 2003 models should not suffer this problem. Once the coil packs are replaced, the affected models should also be OK.
My 2003 has been excellent so far. I only have roughly 4,000 miles, as I have only had the car since December 20, 2002. I am very happy with the performance, and also with the wonderful sound from the W8 engine and the 4 exhaust tips (dual exhaust with 2 tips per side) in the rear!

Just curious, but how do you think it would sound with an intake? do they even make one for that car?
zackiedawg
03-04-2003, 08:04 AM
I'll tell you, it already sounds pretty darn nice the way it is! The engine has a great throaty growl, and when you kick it, the rear dual exhaust gives it a very deep resonance. No mistaking it for anything but an 8!
There is barely any room for an intake...I think you may be able to fit in a Pipercross or something with an open element. It would probably let you hear the intake sucking a little more...but I think the main engine note would overpower any other sound at heavy throttle.

Thanks...I made pretty much the same conclusion when I got it...I couldn't think of a better overall car for the money. There is faster, but cheaper and ride harsh...there is more luxurious but much more expensive...there are better highway cruisers, but too slow and soft to have fun with...there is roomier but too big on the outside...there are more nimble but too small on the inside!
As far as interior, I have always thought the Passat has one of the best on the market, and for features, very few cars at any price can match the GLX or W8 Passats. Some of the things I like which many car manfuacturers do not put on their cars or overlook are:
- Indirect LED lighting to illuminate the center dash area at night in a soft red glow
- interior grab handles and ashtray covers which have 'soft return'...they don't snap back into place, but slowly ease back.
- Rain sensing wipers
- Heated mirrors, front seats, wiper nozzles, and glass
- Power washer sprayers for the front headlights
- Auto levelling bi-xenon headlights
- The little center mini-visor over the rear view mirror
- Remote control and keylock operation of the power windows and sunroof
- Memory seats and mirrors
- Air conditioned glovebox
- Power folding exterior mirrors for parking or tight spots
- One touch auto-down and auto-up front windows with pinch protection
I see quite a few W8s down here...at least 3 or 4 a week while I am commuting to and fro work. But I have not yet seen another W8 Wagon around here (plenty of Passat wagons, but none with W8).

Your dad is lucky...not only can you guys get the nav systems on non US cars, but also the adjustable knee bolster recaro-style seats (ours are the same without the knee bolster)!

I have to take some more interior shots. Most of my pictures were exterior taken when I first got the car. As I complete some more modifications, I will take some more shots of the outside and inside.
I am adding an Abt rear wing, painting the calipers red, looking to lower the suspension about 1 inch, and maybe adding a front spoiler.

Wow, I never really noticed all the small diferences between the two.
Are your side mirrors stock?
Are your side mirrors stock?
zackiedawg
03-05-2003, 01:02 PM
No...my side mirrors are made by InPro. They are chrome, and completely replace the stock mirror backing. They are similar tot he Audi S-style mirrors, except those are brushed aluminum, and I chose the chrome backing since it better matches all the chrome trim on the W8.
My modifications so far are only the 17x8 Momo rims, 35% metallic tinted windows, XM radio (and XM antenna replacing factory Fuba antenna on roof), Escort SR2 Radar Laser detector system, InPro chrome mirror housings, disabled Daytime Running Lights and European headlight switch (U.S. switches only have off/on/on with fogs, whereas the Euroswitches have off/parking lights only/parking with fogs/on/on with fogs).
There are a few Passat folks here who have installed the European Nav/Radio systems in their cars...I thought about it too, and may still decide to do this at some point.

We just purchased a used 2003 (13,800 mile) and WOW what a car. Not much to add other than it looks cool, rides smooth and is darn fast!

Nice, Mr Hans! You got a W8 wagon too! Congratulations, pretty rare combination! And you got one already broken in, when the engine really starts to move.
Are you leaving it 'stock' or will you be dressing it up? My pictures above were after rims and tint...I have since added an Abt rear spoiler from Switzerland, and lacquered the brake calipers red...here are some updated shots:

sorry for the late reply.... It'll stay stock until the warranty is gone or a major cash windfall falls in our lap. in the mean time; will Audi take lay-away purchases for an RS6? (http://www.audiusa.com/model_preview/0,,modelId-200321,00.html)

Zackiedawg,
Nice car, I have a '00 V6 4 Motion 5 speed Wagon. Very solid and understated cars. I always get BMW drivers not moving over when I come up behind them.
At about 120mph they begin to realise it is not a TDI or 2.0. It always amuses me.

Thanks Amokwa. Sounds like you got a pretty good car there too!
I upgraded my rims a few months back...thought I'd throw up some updated pics of my car now:
