well my '94 escort lx sport was running fine...i had the oil sending unit changed because it was leaking oil.
during this change, the oil tube was bent slightly.just enought to keep dip stick from going in all the way. so no way to keep check on oil level.
so i put 2 quarts in one morning, apparently 2 too much, and drove to work (about 15 miles)
on the way it started smoking (a lot) of white smoke.
so when i got home i drained the oil, fixed the oil tube and refilled with proper amount of oil and new filter.
when i changed the filter it seemed to be a little empty,i think it should have had more oil in it than it did.
ok now the car runs rough and smells like it is getting hot. (oil hot)
kinda like it would if you run it with no water, it wants to knock and sputter.
someone told me too much oil will cause the pump to go bad...idk
Youe expertise is greatly apprecieted. Thanx.

Too much oil in the crankcase will cause it to foam up from being hit by the crank. If enough oil is in excess it will keep the pistons from going all the way down and will cause engine damage. The white smoke is steam. Either a cracked head or a blown head gasket is allowing coolant into the combustion chamber which is going out the tailpipe. Although I am not sure about what kind of damage you have I do think that it is major. Check your oil for signs of coolant in it and check the coolant for signs of oil. The dip stick will have a creamy coating on it if it is contaminated and there will be oil in the top of the radiator under the cap if it is contaminated by oil. Bottom line----the oil foamed up so badly that your engine was starved for lubrication. Also, you may have other issues with a damaged head gasket. Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. Hope it turns out to be something minor like a crankcase ventilation valve.

Having had some time to think about it all the symptoms of engine problems you are having could be simply from a blown head gasket. Get that taken care of first. First things first.

Sounds to me like you got much oil in the combustion chambers. Remove plugs if oil fouled clean them up this could cause your misfire/stumbling. You sure smoke was white and not blue? Just in case check coolant level.
