Gas smell

My 1994 Continental, (122,000 miles on it, with the 3.8 liter V-6) smells like fresh gas fumes sometimes on hot days. One time I pulled over and the gas tank was making gurgling noises until I loosened the gas cap. Then the pressure released and I couldn't smell it anymore while driving--unless I tightened the gas cap again.
Any clues to what causes this?
Thanks.

Update: I think I fixed it. The hose to the charcoal canister had a big hole worn in it, and the vapor hose from the fuel tank to the canister was plugged up with dirt. The solenoid that opens to let the vacuum to the canister is working. I think it's OK now.

Thanks. So far, so good. No smell exept for a new burning wire insulation smell now. Fix one and another pops up I guess.
I still love the old POS! :smokin:
