Power mirror

My power mirrors do not work properly. They will adjust inward but not up down or out. My drivers mirror got side swipped the other day and I figured while it was out I could try to fix the power mirror motor. Is there any way to repair them.

Is it both mirrors or just one?

Sometimes ele. motors get stuck in spot if they are not used often. I used to fix a lot of window motors spring of the year in the service drive at the dealership by just slamming the door hard. Why spring of the year? because people dont roll their windows dowm much or at all in the winter.

My mirrors do this once in a while in my silverado. While hitting the button on the drivers door, either you or have someone smack the crap out of the mirror (back side, not the mirror side)

My vote is on the switch. If it will move just not in all directions that is where I would start. The driver side mirror started acting up like that shortly after I bought my truck and I took apart the switch to see if maybe the contacts needed cleaning inside, but at some time before I got the truck somebody spilled something and it leaked into the switch which corroded the contacts. I replaced the switch and it has worked fine since.

You can alway's replace the mirror it is only about $70 per side at stylintrucks.com. It's pretty hard to get inside the mirror assy. The way I have seen it done is to remove the mirror. It should pull off, but it is on there pretty good and trying to get the mirror of will probably end up breaking it. I'd just replace the unit. But, before you do that check to see if the connector's loose. Their are 3 bolts holding it on, I think they are 10mm. Remove the triangle peice from the inside of your door, it should just pull right off, you will see the three nuts that hold it on. Remove the nuts and pull the mirror assy out from the outside. You'll see the connector. If its loose tighten it back up and reinstall, then all should be good again. If it is still tight, get a new mirror. That's my opinion.

If you have a multimeter; start as HRCSlam has recommended and pop off the sail (triangle inside the front of the door) and pull off the quick connect. Test each pole for power.

You should be able to tell right away if it's the switch or the motor based on your results.

Both mirrors will only move in not up or down or out.

Basically, you have a single power wire and a single ground wire going into your mirror control switch on your door. From there the power is routed via many wires to either side. From yoour discriptions of your symptoms it may be your adjustment switch. I would recommened taking it out and cleaning it out with some dust-off (you can get it ay Walmart). There is also some cleaning stuff made for elesctrical equiptment (Best Buy, Office Max or Curcuit City might have some). If cleaning it doesnt work then I'd replace the switch. I think it might just be dirty. Did you take it off roading or did the switch get wet? The switch shouldn't cost to much from your local parts store or dealership. The parts store will likely cost less thn the dealership. NAPA costs just as much as a dealership though. I'd try Checker Auto or Auto Zone they offer military discounts.
