Besides one of those really high dollar snap on brand scanners, are there any universal scanners for the standard DIY gearhead. I tried the scanner at advanced auto and it wont read my vehichle. My old neighbor has a shop and one of those high dolar snap on readers, but i have a job that i travel five days of the week on. So any scanners that normal person could buy for just weekened work. The engine has a little bit of a rough idle but thats it. It runs great and still gets 20-25 mpg.

95's had a few different diagnostic systems as that was the year cars transitioned from OBD1-OBD2. if you computer is on the coolant overflow tank under the hood, then you have OBD2. there are cheaper scanners for OBD2 vehicles that only read general DTC's and only display the code. you would have to look up the code to find the definition. actron has a small pocket OBD2 scanner for about $70. I've also seen one at walmart for about $60 but have no idea how good it is. the more expensive scanners will tell you what the code means and be able to scan older vehicles. if that is not a concern for you, then you can go with the cheaper version.

maybe you thinking of the data port under the dash, thats not the computer. if the computer is not on the coolant tank under the hood, chances are its OBD1. There were 3-4 different setups for the computers in 1995 trucks. If its OBD 1, then an OBD2 scanner would not even connect to your data port.

I have a 95 and I use an autoxray xp240. Mine has the ALDL under the dash left of the steering wheel. The xp240 is an OBD1 but the ALDL under the dash in my 95 takes a vehicle specific connector which I also have from AutoXray. I used to own a 90 Blazer and the 95. I used the same scanner on both but for the 95 I had to change the wire/connector from OBD1 generic to the GM vehicle specific. Following is the description of this connector from autoxray web site.
Web Price $34.95 USD
For use on 1994-95 GM vehicles with a 16-pin OBD-II connector, but still using an OBD-I Engine Control Module (ECM).
This is not just a code reader, it is a scanner. I like that you can watch real time data with the engine running in the driveway or while you are driving.
You can find them on Ebay but you need to make sure it includes the connector you need.
I am planning on selling mine as I now have the 95 and a 97 so I got an autoxray that reads both OBD1 and 2 and it came with 5 connectors including the GM vehicle specific connector.
If anyone is interested I would sell the xp240 with the vehicle specific GM connector for $75 plus shipping. Only drawback is I am in the middle of moving between NJ and TN. This scanner is with the 95 in TN and I am in NJ for a week or two. If anyone just wants more info just pm me your email and I can send pics of the scanner and some screen shots of it showing real time data.
