I have a 96 Avenger 2.5 L V6 back in Februay my check engine light came on. Had it check out and was told that I needed and EGR Valve didn't get it and it ran fine. Until May when sometimes it wouldn't start up right away and it would cut off and wouldn't start back up. It's been doing this throughout May,June,July and now in August. I have two questions note I still haven't got the EGR Valve. But they are, will the EGR Valve cause the car to cut off and stall? Also about it not starting up it went to auto zone to get it checked out and they said the starter was fine along with the battery and alternator. Now I was wondering what could it be if it's not the starter , it dosen't happen often. But when it does happen it acts like it wants to start up but it dosen't it turns over and everything.I hear the engine trying to go but it just dosen't. I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me out thank you.

I’m familiar with the I4, but not the V6 so this is a generic answer, EGR 101 lol. EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation and that’s exactly what it does, mixes some exhaust gas in with the air fuel mixture. This reduces power which in turn reduces combustion chamber heat which in turn reduces certain pollutants. The EGR is only supposed to work at certain times, mostly cruising and so is designed to open and shut, e.g. on sometime and not on sometimes. Idle is one of the times that it’s NOT supposed to be active and if it’s malfunctioning in a way that makes it open during idle, then it would cause your car to run very rough, possibly stalling and be difficult to restart.
That doesn’t sound like exactly what’s happening based on your description so I would tend to suspect something other than the EGR. It’s difficult to diagnose this sort of problem based just on symptoms without doing some testing. Certainly it would be useful to have your engine codes read again. When you have the problem, it’s also helpful to see if you have spark and fuel. These steps would at least narrow it down.
Just FYI, if your engine doesn’t start but does spin (“rrr-rrr-rrr”) at normal speed, it almost certainly means that your starter, battery and alternator are not the problem.
