CD player suddenly stopped working in Sundance

My boyfriend, until recently, owned a '93 Plymouth Sundance with a fairly new CD player installed (it was only a year or two old). I now have the car.
One day we were driving around listening to CDs. He went to change the CD in the CD player, and the CD player kept ejecting the new CD. It would stay in the CD player for a few seconds, and then it would spit it out. It kept doing this over and over. We thought maybe the CD was scratced, so we checked. It wasn't. It also was a regular CD, not a burnt CD. We gave the CD player a rest and tried it the next day because we thought maybe we had played it for too long or something. Nothing. About seven months after the fact, the CD player still does not work. I insert a CD, it spins, and then it ejects. There is no error message or strange sound or anything like that. I've tried pressing play and skipping to different songs, and it still ejects. I also tried using a cleaning disc to clean the player, but it ejected that after a few seconds as well.
What could be the problem? I think it's so strange how it just stopped working all of a sudden like that, especially after we had just listened to a CD without problems.
Help?

try the reset button, if that doesn't help then the lens is probably out of alignment.

JVC makes the head unit and I can't seem to find any sort of reset button.

it will behind the fold down or removable face if it even has one ... not all headunits will have one.
