Just finished replacing the quad 4 in my Daughters 97 Grand AM, everything appears to be connected, but won't start. Engine cranks over and I smell a
lot of gas. Is it still possible to retrieve error codes from the dash by jumpering
a couple of pins on the diag plug, or did GM decide to do away with the flash code? If so, what pins do I need to jumper? Any input appreciated.

A 97 will take a code reader or scanner. It is OBD2 not OBD1. If there are any codes in the computer you should be able to pull them at that time. As for starting, you state you have plenty of fuel but what about spark? Check for spark as you may have an issue with the Crank position sensor or the ignition module on the new engine not working.

Check for spark first.
Also make sure everything is pluged back in like the crank/cam sensors.
Your 97 is OBD II , so it'll take a scanner to check for codes.

Bought a OBDll the other day, and no codes seem to be spitting out, the cam & chank sensors both are plugged in. So how does one go about checking the ignition control module for proper output?

Just R & R the crank position sensor and had the ICM tested, which tested
good. Put it all back together for the umpteen time and still no spark from either coil. Any more suggestions anyone.

Check the ecm. I suspect you either have a bad computer or there is a problem with the wiring. If you have a service manual it will show you how to check the different pins on the ECM. Also check the wires to the ignition module of voltage. This is a tedious process but it is the only way to find out what is happening.
