So my friend and I are tackling the "impossible" or so people would have everyone believe.

here are some pictures but you can follow all progress here. http://repo.jackmoves.com/v/shawn/Eclipse/evo_swap/progress/

Is it all mounted up yet? Or just sitting in there with the hoist? How are the mounts? Do they line up close?

monicle

the drivers side mount bracket needs to be moved forward about 1.5" today Ill be grinding out the welds and repositioning it. the rear mount needs to be moved by about .75"

Looks good so far. I am interested to know how much everything cost?

I can't even imagine the amount of money being spent here and it'll only be FWD in the end... Unless you plan on tackling an AWD setup from the evo for it also?...

david-b
08-14-2007, 04:23 PM
I think in the original thread it's going to be AWD. Taking from GSX IIRC

What are you going to do with the block from the 420a? Interested in selling it?... more specifically to me?

monicle
08-16-2007, 11:57 PM
ok so weve got to make some modifications to the axles. what we had hoped would only be a mildly difficult job of swapping over the outer cv joint we found will not be quite so mildly difficult, different spline counts (25eclipse 27evo) tomorrow or saturday we take them to an axle shop to have them modified. Updates on that after they are ready. Once we have the axles in we can set the motor to rest in its final position.

As for the 420A yeah Im quite sure he'd be willing to let it go for a very reasonable price.

anyone happen to have a link to an online factory service manual for the evo? need to get wiring schematics for the under hood fuse box.

What year Evo and exactly what schematics do you need?

03/04 and Im looking for the wiring from the fusebox to the inside of the car. That would be a great help.

Axles are at the shop. they are remachining the shafts for the correct splines. we are cutting down and machining the longer 420a axles to accept the evo inner joints. Unfortunately he said he couldnt get to it until atleast next week. During this time I will be working on the wiring though to see if I can get it started. Ill also machine the plate for the back of the transmission.

Custom axles FINALLY done. it only took about 6 weeks the last 3 of which were me calling him twice a week to get them done. basically we had 2 eclipse gs passenger side axles machined to the evo shaft length and splined to accept the evo inner joint. Pics and progress to follow this week. we will finally be able to align the motor into its final resting place in the engine bay. we will be moving the motor about 3/4" to the drivers side to more closely match the evo alignment under the hood, and to give us some needed clearance between the pullys and the body on the passenger side.

WOW! BADASS! i remeber this thread, but never thought someone was actually going to go for it! why not go for the AWD? i mean, the GSX rear end, with the EVO T-case... AWESOME! I want to see a running product, and more pics please!

were actually going to be using the talon TSI rear components but yeah its the same thing. we need to get it moving fwd first though unless he gets a 3rd car for a daily driver. hes driving the tsi while we do all the mounting of the motor, rigging of the transmission cable bracket, customization of the axles, and wiring. after the car id driveable we will strip all the components from the tsi and then finally we will do the awd conversion on the gs.

Axles. basically we have 2 420a passenger side axles cut and machined to evo length and to accept the evo inner joints. $75 for the machining, $40 for the extra passenger side axle from the scrap yard, $300 for evo axles.

One other bonus is that the stock evo axles are machined in a few places between the joints to be thinner than stock gs axles, but flare back out to the splines. Why? I dont know. But by using machined gs axles we have thicker than stock evo axles and technically that should result in stronger front axles (assuming the shaft material is the same).

its certainly one step closer. We will have the axles in and have the measurements for the final placement of the motor tomorrow. More pictures to come later this week once we have a little more progress.

updates

so weve got the motor centered and weve designed the new motor mount brackets. We need to get them machined now and get them welded into the car. after that comes wiring :-/

http://repo.jackmoves.com/d/42268-1/SANY5576.JPG

after designing them we cut them out on cardboard to make sure they fit right.
http://repo.jackmoves.com/d/42264-1/SANY5571.JPG

the front portion of this bracket will be changed to be level with the top of the rear portion.

Looks damn good. Keep up the good work man. Cant wait to see it finished. Any idea of when it might be done?

monicle
11-11-2007, 01:22 AM
no clue. my work schedule recently changed and because of time change we can realy only work on it on saturdays. that has slowed us down a bit but we work on it all day so we actually get quite a bit done. this week we will have the new brackets cut and we will have them welded in next saturday assuming its not snowing or anything.

then we pull the motor again, pull the axles again and put new boots on them, put the motor back in, and then get started on whatever is next.

so far heres whats still on the list to be done.

-wiring
-fuel return line
-new rear bracket
-new front bracket and beam that runs from the front subframe to the radiator support
-intercooler
-intercooler piping
-machine block off plate for transfer case

at that point the car should be driveable although only fwd. he is looking into getting a 3rd car so we can start the tear down of the talon then we start the awd conversion.

OMG. someone actually attempting to do this swap.
Awesome work. Keep it up. Looking forward on the updates.

I was thinking about doing this for the longest.

You are using the Evo VII engine and trany. I was thinking about the EVO VIII. but I never actually did the research and started it.

If its not to much trouble. Can you help me with this project also.
I do not mind spending the money, and have a shop that I can call for any work that needs to be done.

Will you be able to give me the specs on the mounts that you had made to replace the original ones and the specs or changes made to the Axels...

P.S. I have a 97 Eclipse 420a (D31A frame) Is your frame also a D31A???

Thank you in advance, Roman

waiting for him to get back into town, when he gets back we are pulling the motor again, so we can finish the welding on the motor mount brackets, and then putting the motor back in to start the wiring.

as for video we will put some up as soon as its running.

Thank you so much. I would greatly appreciate it.

I just checked... the 420a only has 1 body code (D31A). so we all have the same body type. Those with 420a's...

Looking forward for some info and will start my project as soon as get the parts and start the fabricating process.

EDIT:
I will start looking for the engine and trany now. I want to have most of the parts ready. and as soon as I have some help with info from the master, I will start my project...

Looking forward to the fun.

BTW: You used the 6sp MT 4wd right??? I see you removed the rear adapter for the DriveShaft.
I got to get on the ball now, Starting to hunt for parts tomorrow morning.

So all I need now is:
Engine
Trany
Axles
Harness and ECU

Is there anything else I should be looking for while i'm at it?
Well, I'm sure there is, But this would be a good start for now.

EDIT2:
Stupid question.

What years should I be looking at to get the motor/trany from?

monicle
07-04-2008, 11:36 PM
Ok sorry for the delay but Shawn just got back seattle after being there for lord knows how long. We got the motor pulled and finished the welding on the brackets.

Also we fabbed up the bracket and extension for the shift linkage. We use the Eclipse linkage and with these modifications retained the stock position of the shift lever. Because of the Evo transmission hwever the throw is much shorter. This paired with a short throw shifter will be friggin sick.

Heres some photos.

Yes you guys live in washington?

I do to, could I pay you guys to do the same swap you did to your GS eclipse.

It should be alot easier the second time around.

If not could you give me a step by step instruction a mechanic would undestand. simple stuff I would be able to tell a shop to do.

Otherwise I could travel my eclipse and drop it off with money for you guys to do the swap. Hoping to get a reply January otherwise I will just make a rice burner :banghead::mad:
