I got this code the other day, used the scanner and it said automatic transmission fault detected. It cleared the code and about an hour later the CEL comes out again. Ive looked up what could be probable causes, and ive read speed sensors, but my seedometer is working fine. also that it could be the pulse generator, but i dont know what it does. I took it to my buddies shop and they told me the whole tranny is going bad. it will cost me $2400 for a new one. any suggestions as to what i can do before i waste it on a new tranny. this is what's happening to my transmission it sometimes gets stuck into 2nd and 3rd gear and it never downshifts to 1st. i've read something about limp mode, but dont know what causes it to go into limp mode. when braking it shifts hard, and sometimes not at all, and stays in 2nd or 3rd. does anyone know what else i should be looking at.

It may be the actual transmission computer (what's that teh TCM? or something like that?). It may be fried or something and thinking that the tranny itself is bad. I would get a used one or take one from another car and try it out. If the problem keeps happening, it could be the tranny itself then.
