96 Avenger

Hi all.Need some help.My 96 avenger starts hard then smokes black smoke till clears up.Then you try to accelerate and it dies unless you gun it.When you drive it there isnt much power.Please help.

Is this the 4 or 6? The 4 is very sensitive to bad plugs or bad ignition wires. The black smoke usually indicates unburned gas, probably a miss. Does it seem to be missing? You can try disconnecting one plug wire at a time (make sure you're insulated!) and if the engine doesn't run worse, that cylinder is missing and you can investigate further.
